    ^ This.

There's a guy around here that does the surf kayak thing and kills on it. I chatted him up one day and I guess the surf kayaks are pretty big in Australia, where he got his.

Anyway, doing something in the ocean is better than nothing. I say go for it, and don't worry about how ghey you might look. Fun>Ghey

Two suggestions: 1) check out a surf ski instead of a surf kayak and 2) aim towards trying something more the size of an alaia for some paipo/bodyboard surfing. The extra length along with your body length will help you get into waves. Another option is shaping out a marine plywood paipo... start long and the cutting off a couple of inches at a time. Experiment. You will need to catch waves with the board extended in front of you and quickly pull yourself on the board once the wave is caught. Sometimes you can shorten the length and still catch waves by pressing down the nose (flexing it down the wave face) as you kick paddle into the nose.

Touch bases with the owner of Oceansports World, 3220 S Atlantic Ave, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931, Phone: 321-783-4088, as he is an avid surf ski surfrider.

^^^Yes, the wave ski/surf ski thing seems a better option than the surf yak for riding waves. The wave skis I have pieced back together in the past seem to be more surfboard oriented than the kayak thing. They look to plane off, turn and make sections better than the yaks that look to slide sideways a lot more though I am not an expert on the sit down thing. I can perform a mean coffin and a cockroach on my log though but don't think it relates in that I have no paddle. The paipo thing seems interesting if you are OK with the splinters and not floating at all, kind of like cave man surfing.

The wave ski looks pretty sweet, i forgot about those. The reason i was asking about the surf kayak was because there was one for sale for 500 on my local craigslist.

Dude go on craigslist and get a cheap sit on top.

Then proceed to have a ton of fun in 1 foot waves. Just throw a beer in the yak and dont take it too seriously or you will be a tool.

It really can be a lot of fun.

Kayak surfing is great when you arent catching any fish on the yak. F00king fun if you are in it just to goof off.

My buddy sold his wave ski to my wife. It has a fin box and will catch barrells. I have an Ocean Kayak, about 8foot, it has gunnel straps so you can surf up to waist high, then it pearls. It's a blast when its small, easy to transport, and good for diving as well.I've seen a guy surf BIG Reef Road with a very long very narrow kayak, about 12 feet long at least. He could get in early an get out before it closed out, he was going so fast. If I were you on the Gulf, I'd get the Ocean Kayak, but not for $500. Look around a bit, try some pawn shops.

    Dear Bruce,

I saw a guy out Sunday night in a surf kayak in 1 foot waves. He had a PDF and a helmet on. Bruce, don't be that guy.

Saw one first hand in PR last year, it's an under-inflated pool raft really, but the guy and his woman were having a blast on it

They were marketing it, just launched a business making / selling them. They could catch waves with the best of em, they squeeze it and hold onto it in a certain way to generate speed or turn, very similar to boogie boarding but just imagine a small rectangular pool raft instead of a body board lmao, not very appealing to the eye as far as surfing "style" goes, but they didn't seem to care and everybody wanted to talk to them about it out of curiosity. I saw them at Domes, they're probably on here I bet. I've posted a link to their website a long time ago when I got back from PR because it was so odd to me, but whatever floats their boat.
