"VERO BEACH, Fla. - Officials say a woman has been hospitalized after she was bitten by a shark off Vero Beach.

Multiple news agencies report the incident took place Sunday afternoon. Rescue officials responded to the scene around noon for reports of a shark bite.

Vero Beach Police identified Mary Marcus, 57, as the shark bite victim, reports CBS affiliate WPEC in West Palm.

The woman told officials that a shark had bitten her in the leg and then released her. The woman was swimming about 100 yards off the beach when she was bitten, and was able to make it ashore on her own.

Officer Anna Carden told WPEC it appeared to be an exploratory bite, which means it was caused by the shark mistaking the victim for the shape of prey.

She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries."

Ever reach for the milk and grab the orange juice? It's the worst. Probably similar to fresh fish and old lady thigh.

The fish were very active yesterday so i'm not surprised someone got nipped. Yesterday as I was leaving the beach from my 1st session and we see a couple fishing and they caught a small shark, black tip I think, I thought for sure they were going to release it but then I saw them lay it on the sand and then I thought well I hope they at least eat it, but then when I returned for my 2nd session several hours later, the shark was still there, laying on the sand, dead, with the culprits nowhere in sight. WTF is wrong with people? Either eat it or put it back in the water alive, don't just let it die a slow death on the sand and wait for the tide to come take it back out as a floater... people piss me off

My apologies though, I'm 33 and can't see past my nose. It's your choice between fine wine and rotten grapes.

Ed Zachary. Eat it or release it. If you shoot it, you eat it. Except people.
I'm out for surf, be back in a couple

Swimming 100 yards off shore? Not a good idea. What did she think would happen?

This past weekend the shrinp trawlers were in about as close as is legal at FB. About ten of them with flocks of birds above them and I'm sure schools of fishies underneath them. Lots os shrimp in the water right makes for tasty treats for all.
