"-This partnership and technology will allow for advancements in athlete training, access to surfing for people of all levels and increased fan engagement globally"

"May 24, 2016, Santa Monica, CA -- WSL Holdings, the parent company of the World Surf League (WSL), today announced an agreement in principle to acquire a majority stake in the Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC). The partnership between the WSL and KSWC will be dedicated to promoting the growth of high-performance surfing around the world. KSWC's revolutionary technology creates a number of possibilities for the future of the sport. The WSL and the KSWC envision the build-out of a global network of WSL-branded high-performance training centers utilizing this wave technology."

Another quote: "While high-performance surfing is the core mission of both the WSL and the KSWC, the wave technology is flexible and can also create variable waves for beginner and intermediate surfers."

I'm glad I started when I did... I've had a full surfing life, no matter what happens.

My feelings exactly. And what will happen next in the ocean at your favorite break will not be pretty.
By the time it does happen, I will be done with surfing anyways.

Relax guys, this won't ruin surfing lol, If anything, it may make it less crowded because those who are afraid of the ocean due to the obvious hazards can now surf in a safe controlled environment, leaving the dangerous one to us dudes who aren't skeered

It already has been ruined in many places. But it can get worse.
Interesting that WSL is now incorporated, a "for profit" organization. That alone is indicative of a direction one need not out on the water. On shore, fine. Corporate surfers?? Kind of ruins "the karma", doesn't it??
But if they ever go "public", i.e...stocks, I would advise all to NEVER buy any, as you will be investing in a fad.

I dunno where it's been ruined, I doubt it will change anything as far as lineups in the real ocean go. Just my opinion. I think this was the same thing some people were afraid of when Typhoon Lagoon put in a wave pool. Doesn't seem like that did anything either. I live down the road from the damn thing and never been, don't care too really, I mean it's cool and all, but not my thing really. I will say however, if they put one of these on the Vegas Strip, it would be a huge hit out there. I was there from Friday - Tuesday last week and if they had one near my hotel (stayed at Paris) I would have bought the ticket to surf. But there's no ocean there, so it makes sense to put one there.

The reason for wave pools is for profit. The one sure fire way to increase earnings/profit is via "market expansion", higher number of participants. Higher number of participants means more people in the water. It is a basic principle of marketing 101.
In the last few years, most breaks have been filled with wannabe surfers; they just float there, but are obstacles. They have been introduced to surfing via the very principles I mentioned above. Have you seen a summer car advertisement for an SUV that does NOT have surfboards on it or in it?? Doubt it. Market expansion via collateral means.
It can get worse. Much worse. (I am referring to number of persons crowding your break, DSUP, nothing more).

I see your point. I have actually noticed how many more commercials include a surf board in it now. I couldn't believe it when I saw an Izod commercial, preppy clothing! The commercial had a few dudes wearing button downs, khakis and were walking the beach with a surf board in their hand and then they had fishing poles. Dressed real nice to surf and fish. Makes sense right? HAHA I just laugh though, because I still surf uncrowded waves on the regular. Maybe it's because we have so much coast line, other areas may be affected more by it. Surfing isn't for everybody though, it isn't for most. Once they find out how hard it is, they usually give up after a while, so it sorts itself out in the end.

LL BEAN is now selling surf borts as well, mostly SUPs.....but ....they do go well with penny-loafers, don't they??

As a climber witnessing the growth caused by climbing gyms, i can attest that more crowds are coming, although i think that it will not be as bad for the following reasons:

    - you cannot pump anywhere near as many people through the wave pool as through a gym
    - they create a culture that revolves around the gym/pool and doesnt go out into the wild
    - it doesnt teach water skills so any wave of consequence will keep them washing back on shore

Downside is that bad climbers dont get in the way of good climbers since our routes are distinct. Bad surfers definitely get in the way of other surfers. Also much less work to drive to a surf break than to many climbing areas so its easier to get away from noobs.

Prediction is that easily accessible waves on small/moderate days will get worse. Waves with bite will still be ok.

Watching people surf in a man made water fall/fountain gets boring real quick.
If I want to watch people do airs, I'll watch skateboarding or snowboarding. It looks a lot more stylish anyway.

I don't think it's meant to look at, I think it's meant to ride . What i'm getting from what they say is it's really a training tool to work on some stuff and then get back to the ocean. Kinda of like a batting cage for baseball, or driving range for golf.
