Ok so figured I would post this out there since summer is just around the corner and this discussion has come up before but often goes off on tangents.... What (in your opinion) is the best off the rack Groveler board out there for summer in New England. Ankle bitters to waist high. A board that you can rip on and get plenty of speed out of.. Couple of rules to go by. 1. Not a long board 2. OFF THE RACK, no comments about going to local shapers, I get it, but not everyone wants to do that. 3. Sizes dont matter since everyone is different abilities, size, shape, and disabilities.... 4.. Money is not factored into the equation. Whether it is cheap or super overpriced is always a consideration but for this post lets assume they all cost the same. Trying to keep it as simple as possible without bashing brand names. Pick your TOP THREE IN ORDER just for example..... 1. Lost Puddle Jumper 2. Firewire Potatonator 3. Von Sol Flying Mantis
He's kinda right, ya know. You'll get much longer rides on a nothing day when a groveler is just going to frustrate you. Especially for a bigger guy. If you were 135-155lbs I'd say go for it, but if I recall you're like 225 - 245lbs right? Think about the amount of foam you'll need to properly float you on a short stubby board, that thing will be a bobbing cork. Plus when the waves are that small, there's not enough juice behind the wave to really get the kind of momentum you're going to need. But, if you're hell bet on a groveler, then I might suggest a weight loss plan. Not giving you a hard time, just being real.
OK appreciate it, but again I thought this would be a useful thread for EVERYONE on this board, not for a personal note. I always see these threads go off on tangents. There are THOUSANDS of different ways you can go and I know there is not one perfect answer either, just looking for what people opinions would be in this situation under these parameters. Three off the rack summer groveler boards if you had to choose in order based on your experience...or not...
Sorry, thought you were seriously considering one of these boards, didn't realize it was a hypothetical discussion. I got no advice for the hypothetical surfer.
Grovelers are just another piece of crap in the endless marketing of useless shaping ideas. After all, they have to keep you buying "the new and improved", right?? Realistically, surfers need 4 boards--longboard, shortboard (thruster), gun, and a mid-size. The rest is Shiit--marketing
Thank you so much for posting this tread I have waited a few years for someone to come along and knock me off the throne as biggest idiot question posted . My final answer is...the same board the silver surfer uses...hypothetically speaking of course,
Some ideas are good, others are bad, which was my point. If you wish to have 100 different shapes, be my guest-it is a free country. Please note--I included shortbaords in my list of required boards. Therefore, your retort is pathetic. NEXT!!!
well it's short boards so your spelling is pathetic. It wasn't a retort but a question but allow me to follow up with a retort. I believe the short board was made to help surfers do things that longboards couldn't do. To even surf waves That long boards couldn't. It filled a niche. Those short boards were like 7 feet. A mid length today. Then boards got shorter And surfers were able to do even more things and perform well in waves that weren't being surfed. Low and behold someone said I wish I could go surf those little waves and still do the things I was doing on my short board. So they made it a little wider and shorter, and messed around with v and concaves and fin configurations. The groveler was born. Turns out to be a perfect short board for most east coast waves. So some ideas are good. Some are bad was not your point. your point was "Grovelers are just another piece of crap". Yet these boards are being used in waves you wouldn't surf with any of the boards you originally mentioned. And people are having fun with them.
Yup I agree with you, its called progress and advancement in surfing technology. Heck why even have thrusters, quads with different rakes, shapes and sizes. If you wanna stick to the OLD WAY IS THE ONLY WAY of thinking, then why not carve a piece of bark into a plank and stick a big ole long single fin on it!! Some boards are GIMMICKS I'll give you that, but give me a break! There are a ton of boards, materials, fin designs etc... out there that have revolutionized surfing...
