The Hypto is not a groveler, even though it kinda looks like one. They like a clean wave with some decent push and size.

Lost seems to be making the best widely available OTR grovelers these days.

Cool thanks for the input. I actually talked to the Lost company in california today. The guy I spoke with said that I should custom order the board instead of getting one off the rack for my size and ability. At the end of the day he suggested a 6'4"x23'x3 Puddle Jumper which would clock in around 50L Would come with 5 fin setup and would cost 650 out the door. Of course shipping would have to be factored in but said that some shops would work with you on that. So for close to the same price as what shops are charging I could dial in the board to fit a little better for my size, weight, ability, and waves... The 6'4"x221/2x 2.88 stock board he felt would be a little too low in volume for me and 2 ft waves at 47L Said the extra 3L would make a big difference. Also said to go with the WIDE SQUASH instead of the newer style round pin.

I guess my point is what would LOST have to gain by telling me to custom order this size over the stock board when they would get no more money out of it? Got a really good feeling about it, but also found a local shop that just became a lost dealer who is FLUSH with LOST puddle jumpers in a ton of different sizes that is gonna let me demo a 6'4" for the day( at a cost of $30) which I can use towards the purchase of the board if I like it OR as a STORE CREDIT if I dont.. either way I at least get to demo one! Also have another shop I talked to that is willing to let me demo a 6'1" baked Potato that clocks in at 51L... Very happy to be able to get a chance to see if its all hype or if a groveler is something I can actually have fun on for the summer...

That's great news, sounds like he was a participant in this thread  In all seriousness, since you are not a hypothetical surfer any longer, take his advice, only thing I will add is you may want to consider a slightly heavier glassing schedule than what they will probably give you. My memory seems to recall lots of folks who end up with really fragile glass jobs from them but I believe you can get a slightly heavier / thicker schedule, IDK maybe LBCrew or someone can chime in. But that's the only thing I would do, especially as a heavier rider, you don't want to heel dent the crap out of your new board right off the get. It'll make your investment last longer and won't hurt your performance I don't think.
    Exactly

Good question, 2FUn, and here is your answer, straight from a California shaper who has been my friend for a long time: Last year, California shapers over-produced boards--there is a glut of them in stores, and the guy you spoke with is trying to reduce his overstock. Right now, most shapers are not shaping much, other than trying new ideas--the overstock has to be sold off first, so the shapers can get orders. Marketing: supply and demand. Period.

I don't think you understood what I was saying... the guy from LOST was telling me to CUSTOM ORDER the puddle jumper instead of buying the production off the rack board. So if what you said is correct they would PUSH to have me buy off the rack hence freeing up more boards off the rack...Unless Im missing what you are saying.. Also if you go by basic supply and demand rules, if there is an OVERSUPPLY of boards in shops greater than the demand then the board prices should be GOING DOWN not staying the same or in some cases going UP....

I did misunderstand you. But my statement remains correct anyway. Who knows--maybe they are trying to keep a shaper busy?? Many shapers have little to do presently. While last year was a great production year, sales may have been way lower than expected, resulting in the board glut. It should work its way out sooner or later.
At least they have the guts at ..Lost to provide you with you want during a slow time?? In the long run, that always works in a brands favor, doesn't it?

    A 6'4" x22" x 3" puddle jumper? Does it come with a paddle?

If you're gonna buy a Lost board go look at the used ones at a local shop. They do not hold up as well as many other brands in my experience. I bought one off the rack and in one season it had dimples all over the bottom. So last Memorial day I checked out two shops with used boards and saw the same thing with the Lost boards. I surf one board 95% of the time at my local break in knee to headhigh surf. It was shaped by a friend I grew up surfing with so he knows are break and my surfing. My only regret with the board is I didn't put a deck pad on when I got it.

trying to lock you into a sale(?) If you go to a shop, you'll be tempted by other brands. 6'4" x22" x 3" puddle jumper sounds awfully huge...how much do you weigh?

Re: glass job and how well the board will hold up... If you're truly customizing, you might be able to ask for a higher density core and/or a heavier glass job. In my experience, a combination of both works best. A guy your size does not want a "pro" or "comp" density core. You want a minimum of "stock" density or higher. In US Blanks, that's Blue or Green, respectively. On top of that you might want to ask for a 6/4 deck, rather than 4/4. I've done 4/4 with just E glass, and 4/4 with E/S glass combo, but neither holds up like 6/4 in terms of denting. People say it does, but it does not. And I'm speaking from experience, being a bigger than average guy. Other options include strategic patches... an added tail patch and a second patch under your chest/front foot.

Another, better, option IMO... why not go with hand shaped EPS/Epoxy? You could do standard #2 core with double 6 deck, single 6 bottom, and have a seriously strong board for the same weight as standard PU construction.

LBCrew knows what he's talking about... He shaped me a board 2 years ago and it's held up better than any other board I've ever had.

That's what I thought, most guys I see ripping on a groveler in really small waves are your size. Doesn't mean someone larger can't, it's just an observation. Bigger dudes I see doing much better on the LB or a really thick mini Simmons.
