I'm particularly concerned with New Jersey, I have been looking through my town's ordinances but haven't found anything. Wondering if anyone has some knowledge on this subject.
In some spots yes. You are responsible for any damage your board causes to people or things leash or no leash according to the law.
Yes, and if you don't strap around your neck or wrist it's double fine and people chuck your shyte in the ocean
This is fascinating...exactly how is this "responsibility" enforced? I mean lets say we're both surfing and we collide. I'm surfing, you're paddling back out. My board hits you and damages you and/or your board. You say I carelessly ran you over. I say I was up and riding and you unexpectedly paddled right into my path when you could have followed known rules of surfing and avoided but didn't. Who decides? Any chance you could provide a link to this law?
It's simple, wear your leash if you're surfing in a crowd and/or the waves are decent. If you're surfing by yourself and/or the waves are **** do whatever tickles your tits. I know AP tried to pass an ordinance 8-10 years ago requiring a leash but I don't think it was passed. You can read about the legal implications of surfing here (http://scholarlycommons.law.cwsl.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1093&context=cwlr). It's not specific to NJ though. I took a quick look at some of the beaches and couldn't find any statutes requiring leashes be worn.
Must be nice to be so close to the beach to have that option... No leash in Florida and you're in for quite the swim.
Wear leash with crowds, save yourself a lawsuit. I don't know why people like chasing after their boards anyway? I get it with logging, you don't want a leash jamming you up whilst nose riding and that shouldn't be an issue on smaller days.
I rarely have a problem nose riding while wearing a leash, if you have the proper length of leash (same length as the board) it shouldn't be an issue. Once you're up and moving the leash drags behind keeping it out of the way, at least for me. The only time I have problems with a leash is if I leave it wrapped around my board after a session (only 1% of the time) and it's coiled up causing it to tangle and getting in the way on the pop up, but I can usually move my feet and get out of it no problem. 99% of the time I take my leash off right after the session and hang it or lay it so that it's not all balled or tangled up.
Can't tell if you are actually curious to specific wordings or if you actually think you shouldn't be responsible when your board damages something
Actually neither of the above - I'm just bored at work But at the same time, stoked......... I ordered a custom Chemistry board, I think it got delivered to Malibus Surf Shop today, and Monday is suppose to be 3 foot and west winds all day.
