global warming is changing the weather

We are having an above average temperature month for October, but climatologically speaking you don't want to base one swell event or one month of temperatures on a large scale phenomenon like global warming. But, rather you look at long term trends in years, decades, and longer.

I've been forecasting surf for about 10 years now and there is absolutely nothing abnormal about the current swell we are seeing. Check out the swellinfo pressure maps. We have a high pressure hovered over the northeast, which is combining with a small surface low off the southeast coast to create a substantial NE pressure gradient. A storm system is anticipated to develop north of the Gulf of the Mexico and push its way towards the Northeast through the weekend. This will allow winds to shift southerly and potentially allow for an offshore shift as the system moves off the coast (pending on track of the low).

 

According to the weather channel this is an el nino year. Which mean more storms in the Pacific, less in the Atlantic, and warmer temps. Which we have had, not that it has anything to do with this storm system, but it has effected the amount of swell we've had this year. So its most likely not global warming thats making our waves suck.

 

just keep in mind that the global climate is all connected.

So what we call "teleconnections", such as El Nino is of course going to be impacted by a global warming influence. I dont know enough about the direct correlation tho... but I believe the frequency of el nino events have increased in the recent decade or two ...

Have you heard of the so called butterfly effect?
So, where a small change in an initial condition, will impact the whole system. A butterfly flapping its wings, could change the outcome of a hurricane event??

 

I deal with PhD geologists on a daily basis and when I ask them about global warming they laugh and tell me that anyone who knows anything about the earth knows that global warming is not even a topic of discussion.

Plus it is not the scapegoat for why the wind is going to go south after this NorEaster blows through.

I paddled out last night North end Spring Lake and had some fun in the chop. A lot of speed and some good size. Of course I'd rather have spitting barrels, but it's jerZ, I'm happy anytime it isn't ankle high...

There's a couple articles

they basically say that CO2 is not causing global warming but our warming trends are caused by the sun. Other planets in our solar system are seeing the same changes. Not trying to spark any kind of controversy but I'd believe a scientist over a politician anyday.

 

I believe it and have run into the same thing....geologists typically think in terms of climatological trends lasting tens of thousands of years or more....

They look at a few decades worth of data showing human induced CO2 increases and possible temperature increases and regard it as a tiny blip (noise) in a much larger trend of massive warming and hundreds of feet of sea level rise since the end of the last ice age.

 

well lets not forget about global cooling. while global warming may be happening, we are also loosing the amount of sunlight we get each year, as a result of all the pollution were putting up there

and for pollution from cars, i heard once that eating one less hamburger a week will have a much greater effect on helping the environment then not driving, because of the mass quantity of livestock that give off gas

Wadda kook, if geologists suggested that you read those articles their doctorates are highly in question. Sounds to me like you listen to a bit too much right-wing talk radio. Clam up Rush...

 

Don't quote me but it's my understanding that Earth goes through Ice Ages every certain amount of years, 10,000 is what I heard. Apparently it is on the tail end of the latest Ice Age. The only question I see is whether or not the rate at which it is changing is abnormally fast. But I'm pretty sure there isn't enough prehistoric data to determine the previous rates, so, yeah...

Many "climatetoligists" would also disagree. This is a well orchastrated political propaganda scheme. Most people speaking about this subject know little or nothing about it. Those that do will tell you that we really have no idea if mankind is causing anything.

 

I respectively disagree. I spent 4 years in graduate school in one of the only climatology departments in the country. So, I am not speaking from personal opinion, but rather from a collective understanding of the popular research going on.

There is one outspoken skeptic in the department, and through his research he says that the data is just not conclusive enough to indicate a definitely increase in a global average temperature. Studies like this are very valuable, but the majority of scientists looking at the climate disagree with him.

Most scientific studies, aren't solely going to prove or disprove a theory, but when we get a large collection of studies on a particular area than we can start to form opinions.

My strong personal opinion is that we will never be 100% certain that a global warming influence is currently or is going to cause devastating effects on the climate, but since much evidence points to these kind of possibilities, wouldn't it be worth it to change to a clean, alternative resources?? EVEN IF WERE WRONG, I think it is worth making these changes, due to the POTENTIAL significant impact we may be causing. There's no easy solution for this change, but it is undoubtedly possible.

In fact, humans as a species know little about this or anything to do with the world for that matter. How many other countries are talking about this issue?

 

Yeah, we arent affecting the rates of climate change yeah...

We dont have much info on prehistoric climatological changes... yeah.

Give me a break... I wonder what the average level of education is here on this board?
