Hockey Legend, Gordie Howe, died this morning. He was 88 years old. One of the Greatest of All Time in Hockey. 4 Time Stanley Cup Winner and 23 time All-Star (in 26 seasons).

He was before my time but he's a f*cking legend. Dude played in the NHL when he was 52 years old.

DPSUP - that was a classic case of 'think it to yourself and keep it to yourself'. Plus, it wasn't funny. my bad. respect to Gordie.

I got free beer from my team after a game once for doing that. The fight was a joke though, my bud on the other team volunteered. Before the face off he brought it up and suggested we go at it to complete the GH hat trick. Wasn't much of a fight since we were both wearing cages at the time but both teams thought it was pretty funny. We were laughing while we were fighting too.

Free beer is good. He got free beer too.

    and without a helmet.

Back in the days, hockey was a softer game. No one wore helmets and even goalie masks were very primitive to the game. Only till the early eighties is was still a player's option to wear a helmet. Then, it was more of a stick-check and puck handling game. Some of the old footage of the game of hockey looks like slow motion compared to the game that is played these days. You now have faster skaters, heavier checking, and many loose swinging sticks, bigger brawls, and bigger balls is what keeps the fans interest.
Been a NY Rangers fan since a youngun, and admired a lot of these guys. Phil Esposito, Mark Messier, Brad Park, etc., and always, Eddie Giacomin was my idol.
What really made an impression on me was Gerry Cheevers ( Boston Bruins) his goalie mask was drawn stitches, that every puck and stick made contact with his mug.

I did get to see Howe play when he was with the Red Wings, although back then you don't realize history in the making.

Its good to see people on here remember the best. Howe and Ali. I feel bad for those who don't understand how great. I don't see pond or street hockey played anymore. It's weird. Boxing isn't what it used to be either. Getting old sucks. Remember " I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out!" Good times. "Jesus saves,... and Howe scores on the rebound." ha

I like showing respect for the great ones, and he was certainly great, although before my time, I follow sports in general and most of the history of each sport.
