I'm confused on this one? What is the initial problem here? He got kicked out of the water at 5:30PM when they left? So, when the life guards leave, they make everyone clear the water? I used to live in OC a long time ago, and I don't remember ever getting harrassed after the guards left. And they were usually pretty cool even at 10am most of the time. They have setup on their tower when the waves were good and they let me surf until there was a small crowd on the beach... I mean, they have usually been pretty cool to me. If you are floating around with a ton of foam boarders or something, maybe you should re-evaluate where you are paddling out.
I really don't get how frustrated people get with the guards... I understand the lack of room to surf and the crowding and all, but I've never really had a problem with guards themselves. Sounds dumb, but they are really just doing their job. The rules suck, but they didn't make them. I'm always cool with the ones who guard on the streets I'm at and they always know me and are as mellow as can be to the people who are always out, or heading in when they're coming out. Like I've said before, alot of them are watermen and good surfers too, so why don't you CHILL. These kinds of threads are getting old. on a side note, if this swell hits I'm screwed. just got 6 stitches in my chin and have a few fractured fingers and a hand so raw I have to keep it wrapped in gauze. hopefully I'll heal enough to get a few, but if not I'll be shooting.
Today I was out on the beach by the jetty on 7th st (can't see it cuz it's covered in sand) and the guard called everyone in from all around him, on the beach and from the water, and got everyone's attention. He then introduced himself (Matt) and started to explain some rules/regulations to the listening crowd (alcohol/ball throwing in water), and explained how right there is just shorebreak, so don't try to ride waves. He also thanked everyone for coming to Ocean City and wished us a good day. OCBP started doing these call-ins/lessons recently, correct? It was pretty cool to hear him, at least explain whats up and lay down some rules. I mean, there's really not much for him to do lately anyway Is there a specific name for these? BUT one thing and an important thing: He forgot to mention to pick up your trash! It's been getting pretty sloppy out there. Last thing, why don't guards use bullhorns instead of looking like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nEfJPfImHw Hahaha it would make sense
haha thats pretty funny. I think he might just still be drunk from the late night with the frat bros. Stupid cops on the beach.
alright, alright, KB4L has lurked long enough. I know that this knee shredder appreciates having some back up close at hand when he is expanding the limits of the knee ripping genre. Thank the good lord and jesus christ that these "dune angels" were placed here to protect us one and all. Praise be to the great state of Pennsyltucky for producing such a fine class of gentleman.
Do the calculations In mid-summer, Surfers have free reign from 6am til 10am (4 hours) and again from 5:30 to about 8-8:30pm (3 hours) totaling seven hours (if you stretch it) when the winds are usually the lightest. The guards have from 10am until 5:30pm (totaling 7.5 hours) during the day when the winds are not usually the lightest. During those intervals, surfers typically get two tides to work with, guards get one tide to deal with. Sounds pretty much like parity to me. If your boardshorts are still too tight, it may be reason enough to take up sponging where there are few if any hinderances. And then there's always Assateague where if you get hired as a guard you can surf all day under the guise of physical fitness training, albeit on a paddle board.
They are EDU's (education sessions) and they are mandatory on Sunday's. There are also held on other days when the ocean conditions are hazardous. Bull Horns.. too expensive and even more equipment for the guard to carry. Not to mention after one season the insides get corroded and it starts sounding like garble when you use them. They do have a few, just rarely use them.
hear you but sadly it's not that simple. what really needs to be addressed is that out of the three surfing beaches, only one is viable most of the time. uptown is all shorebreak and the inlet sux a lot of the time too. so, we don't really have 3 beaches. 1 is pretty much it.
wow kid... A. your wrong B. all down town Crew are Kooks agree, But up town like crew 17 aka 145 street his name is Joe and street 139 Jay i surf with both of them all the time.. crew 17-15 cool guys any one else kooks
...lostgirl has a good point. usually only 1 beach is good for surfing. and usually joe is there trying to force himself into a heart attack blowing his whistle. Ive been surfing at the surf beaches for a while now and this year i noticed most of the surf beach lifeguards dont surf. plus ive never seen a swimmer get a ticket for going in the surf area. i see kids get tickets for going out of the surfing area. I thought the lifeguards were there to protect the swimmers, not give surfers tickets or hassle people who ALREADY KNOW THE RULES. I just wish whoever is in charge of the surf beaches would be a little more flexible with the size of the surfing areas, especially when there is a lot of drift or when it is crowded. Whatever happened to working **** out? too bad the inlet sucks this year
hahaha. i've told him to chill on the whistle! i also try not to schedule him on good streets where he'd get stressed out.lol sadly we don't have the authority to make the surf beach bigger.. that's up to the city council unfortunately.
its like that every year but seriously yeah i recommend to those who make the selections that candidates have water experience (whether it be bodyboarding or surfing). unfortunately, i don't do the hiring in the spring. did get to sit in on interviews for a few slots in early summer though. but yeah only 3 of 8 of us surf. :/ i think it would realllyy help if that was a requirement in getting the job.
Gay They think you are cute and wanna see you strut your stuff....I say you should ask them out for drinks in Rehobeth...I think they have their GAYDAR working and spot you a mile away.... Good luck...
I know the council voted on them being "one" city block........ but, who would notice if the flags were moved 50-100 ft each direction. Do it for us, plz. I won't tell
we do move it somewhat when the swell is good. if i moved it that much though, the area supervisor would write me up. :/ sorry wish we had the authority to extend it more. and seriously the people on the beach are a nightmare with this. it's apparently a huge deal for them to even walk a half block off the beach to swim muchless further.
