In a conversation with CBS News, a San Diego attorney named David Hiden said he notified a manager at the Coronado Springs Resort — part of the the Orlando Disney World complex — in April 2015 after an alligator “rapidly” came after his son, who was wading in the hotel’s lagoon.

“And the response, I couldn’t believe it,” he said in the interview. According to Hiden, the manager replied, “Those are resident pets, and we’ve known about them for years. And they’re harmless, they’re not going to attack anybody.”

Hiden said: “I said, ‘I hope I’m wrong, but at some point, I bet I’m going to read about you guys where one of your resident pets killed somebody. And I hope to god it never happens because it’s gonna be on your shoulders.'”

Is that the Coronado Springs Resort and lagoon? Looks a lot like the Hotel Del Coronado in SD

He was "wading" in waist deep water. That's swimming as far as I'm concerned. I think all parties are partially at fault here (except the actual kid). It's negligence on Disney and the parents.

Does it fvcking matter who's at fault?

A 2 year old child is dead. Don't you think that's punishment enough for his family or should they also spend the rest of their lives in prison, too? ...because a$$holes who weren't there want to crucify them.

I agree, not the brightest bulbs on the planet, i had enough sense not to go wading in that water, and hell no in the dark.

Maybe Disney should put more alligator signs, but gotdamn, New Smyrna Beach doesn't get sued every time somebody gets bit by a shark.

People need to stop judging others', it's not our job.
And when you point a finger at someone, there's 3 pointing back at you.

I was there with my kids last week of April. Literally there as in building 8 of Grand Floridian, ground floor room, 20 some yards from the same lake. I understand the boy's body was recovered by building 9, right next to ours. Stood on that beach. The lifeguard would've been the one manning the little water slide play area for kids right next door, or the one manning the larger pool. That pool has a big water slide, and both are wade-in style, with the beach coming right up to them. Nothing would prevent a gator from theoretically walking from the beach into the pool if willing to cover a distance of 75 yards or so.

That said, there are numerous signs, clear as day all over the place. They say No Swimming, and others say Don't Feed the Wildlife. They don't call out gators specifically. Given this, you have to understand the lake itself. That sht is nasty. It's a joke to even have a little beach there when the water is a typical large Florida lake, muddy with weedgrowth along the shore....no effing way you would wan't to wade or swim in there, even if only a foot deep. They also had their other kid in a play pen some 20-30 yds from the water. Gators or not, at 9 at night in hot Florida, you don't want your kid exposed to the bugs typically there around water. Also even without gators that water could have snakes, sharp objects, or bacteria in it. I don't get the lack of common sense there, but do feel for them. This one definitely creeped me out.

Now Disney has a very little leverage here. They, more than almost any other major company, value their stellar, dare I say magical, reputation. They are known as having in general the best customer service out there.

Given this, you can still YouTube videos of alligators in that very lake, and look up the recent report that the Polynesian resort, right next door on the lake as well, had told management about guests feeding gators but nothing was done. Disney would wind up taking the high hard one in court over this. I think the family is gonna simply name a price, and the Magic Kingdom will happily settle out of court.

There is no way with canals feeding into that large a lake, they can keep gators out of there. I can't believe something hasn't happened sooner. They definitely should look into putting up some sort of barrier there. Sheesh.
