I feel a little bit better reading this thread. I was prejudiced against longboards for a good 15 years before I discovered just how much damn fun they are. So many days blown struggling on a short boart when I should have been riding a log. I'll have to post up a pic of it...10' pin tail, yellow, with red racing stripes and a monster wood single fin. Talk about glide. Wait till you try a sup 2fun.
Same...I had (to the best of my recollection) never ridden one until 1997. nobody my age fooled with them in the 80s. Old guy at my spot had a 9'8" Hap Jacobs ( I know the length because I've tried to buy it off him, most recently about a month ago). The waves were just like those pictures I posted yesterday, summer mush, he insisted, and I rode a board over 7 feet long for the first time. Mind blowing experience. I went out and bought a used Jon Ashton log that summer.
All this brouhaha about long boards. Well, it is a different age than when I rode my first wave, 1961. It was a Velzy, I believe. But until 1967 or so, longboards were it--there were no other boars, other than the rhino chasers made for Hawaii. Then came the "minis", then "shortboards" (defined as 7'10" or smaller), then the door opened in the 70's to all the shapes boards have evolved to. It has been fun watching this from the beginning. Of course, how we now define "shortboard" is much different than 30-40 years ago. But a longboard is fun, however, I still feel shorter boards are much more fun--one is "closer" to the wave, centered to the energy. But I still have two "official" longboards (greater than 9ft), still use them during small swells, BUT.....every now and then, when there is a good shoulder to head high swell, I take out my 9'" G&S Comp Rounded pintail and have a blast. It is a "high-performance" longboard, if such a thing truly exists, but it is NOT a log per se. Fun. I am 65 and still enjoying this trip we call surfing. I think I am in good enough shape for a few more years. I will probably end up were I started, finishing up my surfing days on longboards. Full circle. So it goes in life. Enjoy it while you can; life and good health are incredibly ephemeral. Cheers!!
hope I'm surfing at 65 CUDA! motivates me to stay in shape at 47! bought a 9'2 model T off c.l. no regrets at all! I still suck but I'm having a blast and trying like hell! I cannot get enough of the ocean! don't forget BIG WEDNESDAY!
I met a guy the other day who's 82 and still surfs. If you met him, only his skin gives away his age. He's sharp as a tack, fit, and brims with positive energy. Good guy to hang around with.
OK so just had a great idea (or a moment of insanity) When I die, I want to be creamated, then I want my ashes to be mixed into recycled material and made into a surfboard. This way my loved ones can ride me on waves for all of eternity! Cmon you know its a great idea!!!
More than likely your loved ones end up letting you sit in the corner of the garage collecting dust. Get a few dings then sell you on craigslist! Ha.. sorry All this longboard talk did something good, cuz as we head into this 4th of July weekend we are looking at some waist high waves. I'm breaking out the log and looking to have 2 or more mornings of ripples! God Bless 'Merica
HA HA, Guess Im gonna have to go and demo some longboards.. I am off for the next two weeks and plan on hitting the water as much as possible during that time, unless it is totally flat I will be out there on either a LB or one of my other boards depending if we get "lucky" and catch a swell up here.....Any local shapers in the NH area that anyone can suggest to talk to about a LB? Maybe one that will even let me demo one?
I have a 9'6 50/50 noserider for the right conditions, but it isn't my small wave board. I wouldn't want to take it out on a choppy and crowded day (it's not fun if there aren't lines, I don't like to wear a leash so that I can cross-step and don't want to kill someone if it gets away, it hates small and steep, etc.) I have been using a Catchsurf Skipper 6'0 on small days. I'm 6'1, 180ish and it gets in just about as easily as the 9'6 and can be whipped around in anything. I've even wakesurfed it without a problem. If people make fun of you for riding a foamie in small summer surf, you're not doing it right.
