Paulownia wood is what I used. Soft and lightweight like balsa making it super easy to work with and it is water resistant. I ordered a piece from Oregon and it was fairly cheap. It was a lot of fun to make a hand plane with because of the easy workability.
Had a memorable sesh at Wilderness in PR at the left going into the keyhole. 10-12 foot faces. Getting fully barreled and coming out. Although it was brutal getting out of the wave after it shut down.
Think I'm going to make a new one now with all this talk about it.

archy... there's a place (or at least used to be) in Georgia that grows and sells paulownia. Might save a few bucks on shipping.

Guys, anything is good to do this with, doesn't have to be wood. I'm assuming you can already body surf, it just makes body surfing a little better by allowing you to get your body out of the water a bit. Get some fins and strap something to your hand, don't make it harder than it has to be.

Depends on if you're talking hand plane, paipo, or alaia. Sort of reverse engineer it... draw up what you want as a finished project, then work backwards to the appropriate blank, keeping in mind you may need to glue up a few different pieces to get to what you want in the end.

If you opened with naked pics of your wife, girl, mistress or hot neighbor you would have been made to feel more welcome...maybe.

Thanks LBcrew, seems a bit pricey from what I paid, but what the heck with it, ship pings included. The one I made is approx 9" by 14" by 5/8" so I guess the smallest board on offer at top of page should be fine.

I've found On a bigger wave with a hand plane you can get pretty much almost your whole torso out of the water by putting both hands on board.. Lots of fun. Getting amped just talkin about it.

After a bigger, better day I remember my novelty surf stuff and wish I would have given it a shot. If the surf is pumping I want to do my best to perform on my boards. Maybe the next hurricane to come through i'll fight the urge to stay on the board.

Definatley do, even for just a few. The speed is incredible. I rarely if ever use a hand plane at home just to take advantage of those epic days, but spending a month or two at a clip in the tropics affords me the time to mess around without feeling I'm missing out or wasting precious surf borting time.

Well, I have no ability to make something like that, and they look pretty cool to me. If I'm in the market, I'd buy one.
