Thinking of taking at trip this fall/winter to visit some relatives in Sardinia, and wanted to know if anyone here has been. Any feedback on waves, locations, best months, and camping. I've only seen a few surfin vids, and have'nt researched on the interweb yet. Lookin to get some first person info, and anything is much appreciated.
well, the fetch is about the same as the gulf of mexico...meaning the few times it gets ridable waves will probably be small, weak wind chop. I have to guess those pics on the net showing Italy with head high, offshore A-frames are probably those once a year swells when everything lines up. Just expect it to be flat as a lake and you may be surprised. I would still go...it's fvcking Italy!
I don't know about Sardinia but I did surf on two occasions during my stay in Sicily. One was beach break near Palermo and the other was rock reef near Aggrigento. Beach break was ok at best, rock reef was pretty consistent. Not many other surfers around. People are friendly and will help you out if you're nice and not an asshat. Also, cash is king in Sicily. Many businesses are still old school and won't do any kind of electronic transactions. Any way if Sicily has waves i imagine Sardinia does as well. But you could take a boat or fly to Sicily fairly easy as well. Good luck! Oh and even without the surf the trip is worth it for the food alone!
Thanks Surfrr, cash is me motto. I've seen some vid of Sicily. Some of the setups look sweet. I don't expect much in way of surf, just in it more for the experience and family.
I've been to Sicily twice to hang out with relatives and sightsee. The towns and rural areas are just amazing (both coasts and the mountains) and like the other guy said, food that you won't ever forget. Aggrigento had surf when I was there although I didn't surf, and faces west, which is the side of Sardinia spots are. Just make sure you go. that little corner of the world is pretty epic.
Mitchell and Surfrr, what time of year/months were you there? How big was the surf? How was the weather? I'm lookin to do some camping too. Thanks for your responses, much appreciated.
