Has anyone ridden either of these boards and have some feedback. There are not a lot of reviews or feedback online. I am trying to decide between the two boards. Looking for an all around board for the East Coast.
The east coast is a pretty damn big place and nobody has any idea what kind of surfer you are. You might want to provide more information if you expect to get something useful in return. They both look like good all around shapes...one diamond swallow tail, one swallow tail. They look like they would both be fun boards in chest+ high surf. Honestly though, I haven't ridden a wave in a month and a half where I would want either one of those boards, since its mostly been thigh to waist high slop. I've given up on the idea of an all-around board a long time ago. Do you plan to only own one surfboard? Just a thought.
I have a Mutant...similar to the Diamond Fish. It's shaped a little too high performance for summer mush, imo. If you're talking usual east coast summer waves, I'd be thinking more along the lines of a Pool Toy or Dream Machine. The paco is listed as for "Waist to Overhead beach, reef or point breaks", so maybe add it or a DF in the quiver for the better days.
Here is a vexing dilema...I want to order a Diamond Hope board from Roberts; it is just the shape I want/need. So I went to a local surf-shop which sells Roberts--I was really disappointed in the quality of the stock boards they have. Real let down. Flimsy, way too light (which explains flimsy construction,) ..etc, etc. Cloth used is way to weak.....NEXT!!! So....back to a search for a good shaper to make what I want.
Roberts poly are not any flimsier than Lost or Channel Islands. I ordered mine in Hydroflex Natural construction...nothing flimsy about that.
I'm just guessing here the "Vexing dilema" you experienced is related to dementia more than a surfboard but either way...you said you want to order a board, but found the stock boards too light. So order it with the glassing you want, or get EPS epoxy, or hydroflex. What does the stock board you picked up and found light have to do with your potential order? Stock shop boards are glassed lightly because that appeals to others and keeps cost down. Big deal.
Listen to Mitchell, sparky. He's got the DMV dialed & he's a much better surfer than you'll ever be, plus he shapes boarts, too - - translation, he's saving you money by ripping you a new one. I learned the dumbass way with boarts. In the early going I bot several cause I fell for the marketing shinola of 'the one boart quiver.' There is no one-boart quiver, not on the east coast. If there is, then you must weigh 110 lbs & in that case? Get you a Wavestorm.
i dont think theres really such a thing as an "all around" board, no matter what coast you're on. especially not east. get both, sell the one you like least. rinse, repeat. or just know what you're looking for in a board to begin with.
He's not local to you up in NH, Barry... he's in NY. But he's good, and will have no problem dialing in a board for you, shape, construction, color, and all... His name is Rick, and he's a good guy. http://www.malwitzsurfboards.com/
You ever look into ordering a custom Coil? They're down here in Melbourne, but they can hook you up. Pretty much anything you want, but in their tech. Best money I have ever spent.
He's an artist and surfer, with an exceptional eye for detail and the skills to make the vision in his head a reality with his hands. I can't say enough good things about him.
