Actually Cep, I watched a documentary recently (on PBS lol) featuring Saudi Arabia that showed quite a bit of extreme 3rd World poverty on a similar level of India.

Yeah look at some of the "successful" states in the middle east:

UAE - Monarchy (authoritarian)
Saudi Arabia - Monarchy (authoritarian)
Jordan - Monarchy (authoritarian)

Obviously, the definition of a "successful state" is pretty low in the middle east as far as individual freedoms but I'd say the measuring stick should be how stable they are. Iraq was once a pretty stable country, same with Egypt, but the dictators were booted out and now they are democratic **** holes. I've heard it said that Islam and democracy are incompatible. I'd say that everything we've seen in the past 10+ years has strengthened that argument.
