A single fin 9'6 50/50 made of glass by a person. Don't get a board that turns well, learn how to turn on a longboard.

Gonna pass on some information I got from LBCREW in particular to a thread I started about a longboard... quote.. "9'6 X 23 X 2 7/8 with a relaxed entry rocker, some tail kick, and soft 50/50 rails the whole way except in the very nose, which should be slightly "up" or beveled. As for bottom contours... I like a blended concave in the front 1/3, to flat, to rolled vee through the last third. All contours transition invisibly. No edges anywhere on the board. Single fin. Triple stringer blank, glassed on the heavy side. Of course I am 6 ft 220 in my wetsuit but the size is not gonna hurt you at all. I have been told that anything over the 9 ft range gets trickier to turn, not impossible but trickier especially in smaller surf. My board turns great for me..

I ended up getting a beautiful board on Craigslist that has been great thus far. An Austin Soul Glide 9'4"x 23x 3 1/8 Hand shaped and glassed very heavy in volan glass. It is awesome and I got it for a song. My advice is to first find out what you truly want out of your longboard, do you want to trim and cruise or noseride? or a combination of both? I went with a SINGLE FIN 10 INCH and glad I did. It is awesome! If you cant find a board that fits the bill money wise on Craigslist then go with a local shaper and get what you want. Its good advice, my AUSTIN board was 100% handshaped and finished by Austin surfboards for someone else and it is perfect for me... just my .02 cents...

    1) in my opinion, and probably many others, it's not a true LB unless it's at least 9'. With that being said, I'd go for something 9'-9'4. Especially at your weight. I'm only about 10-15 pounds heavier and have gotten piggies over on a 9'. And it's not a nose rider. Reason why I suggest not going too long is because I personally feel a LB is not just a small wave option. Given the right shaped wave, a LB really comes alive when things pick up. At your size and since it's your first LB, I'd personally go 9', plain Jane all around shape. If your more into nose riding, get a dedicated nose rider down the road. If it turns out your more into the pendulum type feeling of whipping a LB around in bigger stuff, you can go that route later.

    2) LBs get expensive. Moe materials needed. But I'd deffinitly suggest local shaper. Don't got to go custom, go to a local shop and pick something already shaped off the rack. Going custom is something I'd wait for until you know what you want out of the LB.

    3) what a thread for Emass to randomly pop up in! What's going on mang?

    4) LBs are good for small stuff. Obviously. But really. When you get one, don't be in the mind set that it's only for small waves. Riding a LB WILL most deffinitly improve your SB game. And it really is quite a rush to whip a LB around in some chest-HH stuff. I originally got a LB to nose ride. Got a plain Jane all round shape like I suggested to you. Now when I LB I rarely think "get to the nose", instead I'm always thinking "washhhooossshhh"

Thanks for all the replies guys, it has helped a lot. Like many said, I am gonna get an all around around 9'0 maybe a tad bigger. I also was looking at a WRV performance noserider new for 700$. I heard Jesse makes some solid boards, so I might go with that if a local shaper doesnt work out

    Get at least a 9'6. I got a 10' single fin (used, $500) and couldn't be happier.

A longboard should be LONG or else it's a funboard. Funboards are for lamers.

Bravo my man! This made me leak a little.

I really liked the settlers series of commercials for directv.

"Father, why can't we surf instead?

"Because we're settlers! We settle for SUP's!"
