All my first albums were hand-me-downs from my cousins. Crazy variety. There was Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride, Merle Haggard as well as Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, Hendrix, and even the focking Monkeys.
I joined the RCA 1 penny record club when I was like 13 or 14 (1975 or 76) I think I bought Frampton Comes Alive, a couple ZEP albums, Kiss Alive 1, Yes, Floyd, Allmans Eat a Peach, and the Dead's American Beauty album.
I've gone through crazy musical swings. There was my early 80's punk phase with Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear, et al. Then back to my dead head roots. Sublime.
    No disco or hair metal.

First album was American Pie by Don McLean. I was probably 10 or 11.

Next was "Way of the World" by Earth, Wind & Fire around 12 years old. Went to their concert with Mom & Dad and got my first "contact high" and fell asleep halfway through the set.

When I was a teenager growing up in MD/DC area, the rock station DC101 at midnight Saturdays would do the "All Night Album Special". . I think that is what was called. They would play 6 albums uninterrupted. I had the stereo wired into my family's reel to reel and I would record the whole run. I recorded and was exposed to lots of classics, zep, cream, jeff beck, allman bros, fog hat, outlaws, aerosmith, .. to many to remember. I just had to sleep by the tape recorder and be ready to load another tape when needed. The good thing was I able to listen to a lot of cool songs that never aired.

We also back then had a couple of "progressive" stations (WHFS, WGTB) that would push the envelope.. I guess that is how I developed my appreciation for a wide variety. However, like CyC, never disco.

That's a blast from the past man! DC101 and 99.1 WHFS were the soundtrack of my youth. WHFS was the **** until it randomly turned into a mariachi station overnight. I'll never forget the day in school after WHFS died. We all thought it was a joke.

Anywho, first album with my own money: Coolio - Gangsters Paradise. I think I was like 10. A little white kid in tobacco county listening to gangsters paradise. good times!

Folks had a lot of LPs but my vietnam vet cousin dropped this on me around 1973. Read the wiki on this LSD inspired piece that evolved into an animated film. The track "Me and my Arrow" was about a boy and his dog but later you figure out the song is really about a boy and his dong. Always loved the art on the record sleeve and the films animation style.

Yeah man. Growing up in NJ I listened to mostly Philly stations. WIOQ did a similar thing (every night?) called 'LP On Q' where they'd play a full album straight through. Even gave a Dolby tone so you could calibrate your deck. Taped a lot of cool classic rock stuff off of that. Well, it wasn't classic at the time but current.

totally agree man. I tend to feel that way about a lot of bands. Avenged Sevenfold is a good example I really liked their first few albums, but the stuff on the radio now reminds me of metallica's black album, so I've lost interest. Once a band gets to polished I lose interest

WYSP and WMMR for me... and neither one would come in clearly. Lots of crackling and fading in and out. But those were the two rock stations I cut my teeth on as a grom.
