The grass is always greener somewhere else. I'm with Barry here, you don't like it? Don't let the door **** you in the a$$ on the way out. That said its been the worst summer in years and reminds me how much I enjoy surfing
One of the worst things about the summer flatness (in MA/RI) IMO is that for the last two months where it's been light until like 8pm, there has been almost no evenings waves where you can surf after work. I don't really care about the warmth but the light is just wasted in summer. MA has been terrible this summer. Last year, there were always a few early mornings and evenings to be had up on Cape Ann or Hull. None this year (when I've been able to surf).
I still love the eastcoat, i was born and raised there I would just have a tough time returning and laying down any significant roots. I need at least 3-5 solid surf days (chest high or above with favorable conditions) per week for the entire duration of the year to satisfy my surfers itch and continue my progression at the rate I like to. The east coast just doesn't have that kinda consistency. I will however always try to be home to pillage hurricane swells and solid nor Easters and then dip out to parts unknown upon the returning of the eventual flatness. beast coast vs best coast mang
Today looked like hell from the dune but better from the waters edge. Not great at all but better like Mitchell said it was. I still didnt surf, hope he worked his magic and will post a picture making it look all time. Despite the heat i couldnt get myself to paddle out in the crowd.
As soon as my contract is up, Rhode Island will have one less surfer in the lineup. Man alive, this friggin' sucks ass. No way I'm sticking around.
O.P. Here! Thanx guys. Got a kick outta what everybody wrote. Especially hearing that I am " a total Kook"! lol! Awesome. The general concensus seems to be that yeah, it's been pretty bad out there. And yes, I have had a few fun longboard sessions. I will paddle out in anything pretty much, "sunshine&exercise" is my typical quote during the summer. Love the water, enjoy seeing the same summertime crowd, the dolphins, the sunrises...it's all good. Like I said in the begining I was just surprised no-one else started the "God, summertime surf sux" thread is all. Sept. is right around the corner, looking forward to getting back on the Weirdo Ripper. aloha,
Update: I can't take it anymore, probably spent more time this summer walking back to my car with my head down after checking it than in the water. Need. Real. Waves.
wasn't it like waist high plus from Wed - Saturday in Jersey week before last? It was in Delaware, and Delaware is pretty much a swell-repellent zone. As far as the summer goes....I'd call it below average, but nowhere near worst ever. I can remember years where the entire month of July went ankle high.
Yeah no doubt. Still shots with a big zoom lens make waves gutless slow waves look walled up and rippable, and make decent rippable waves look like the swell of the year.
We have had unsurfable (ankle high) conditions for weeks on end up here. This level of flatness is quite unprecedented. On the plus side, the sand build up at my local beach is impressive, the water is the clearest I have *ever* seen, and flatwater SUPPing has been fun.
Whiney stupid post. Go complain to your mom about "how flat it is" I'm sure she can help put your gripe in perspective for you better than I.
We talk about surf when there is surf, what's wrong with talking about the lack of surf. Both are the result of interesting weather patterns.
Do we actually talk about surf when there is surf? Aside from here or there I must completely miss it. Part of that "Don't talk about the waves or else there will be too big of a crowd" bull****.
I'm not complaining. It's been flat down here this summer. Oh well. NSB has been going off on the regs, chest to head high; down here, we've gotten some wind choppe 4th of July, small chest high swell summer solstice, that's it. It's finally starting to break a bit, it was waist to stomach yesterday at one spot for two hours, that's it. If I didn't take this new job (no one put a gun to my head), I would have gone to Costa Rica in June and traveled up to NSB the l;ast few weeks. My fault for being industrious. Does not go well with the surfin lifestyle. But' this has not been the worst summer ever. Even Melbourne has been getting it's share. Maybe it's just that this thread is the worst summer tread evah!
