If you are in DBS, go south to the Lighthouse on the north side of Ponce Inlet. It's a great mellow counterpoint to NSB and gets some nice waves, very spread out lineup. It may be a foot bigger than DBS or the Sunglo Pier.
Almost always a ride able wave, and a good option on those days where the wind blowing hard from the ESE, SE, SSE, or S and everywhere else is blown out.
Also, if you are there for a whole month, go hit the Flagler Beach Pier - it's a nice drive north about 45 minutes. Orange sand. Super cool hippy vibe. Good surf if you get a real swell while you're there.
I know it's no Symrna, but i hear Ponce is a bit sharky as well. Went as far down as Sunglo Pier, but didn't keep going. I'll def check it out, but like said heard it's sharky. Flagler Pier tho is great; very worthwhile break from the in-between spots down A1
It's the same as New Smryna honestly, they are on opposite sides of the inlet so it's really no different, one spot performs better on Northern swells, and the other performs better on Southern swells for obvious reasons (the jetty) so it doesn't matter which you go to when it comes to sharks. I've surfed there countless times with no issues. Don't let it deter you, those two spots are the most consistent in the state.
And that's a lot of days during the summer when the sea breeze kicks in backing winds that were originally SW'ly in the a.m. Not much out there today. Seems like an underperformer relative to the forecast on par with yesterday's overperformance.
Had a great surf session in Oceanside today. Waves were nice early on. By Jersey standards there were some solid waist to the occasional chest high sets and moderate winds. Got very glassy for a while. Was able to to watch some old heads shred. Definitely a nice change of pase from East Coast. The SoCal environment is super rad. Big thanks to Scobes to showing myself and company around SD. So much to do, never enough time. Anticipating my next sesh already. Am hopeful to update with some photos at the end of the trip!
Hey y'all. Been swept up in life and, until recently, the endless FLATNESS. Been surfin the past THREE, count 'em THREE days in a row. There's actually been surf down here in G-Town. Waist high, maybe a little bigger, glassy nugs showin up every afternoon. I'm so dang rusty there's dust on my rust. F***, it's been nice to be on green cleanness! Been lurkin for a few days. This place seems way different, yet the same.
Howdie! Welcome back dude, glad you're shaking some of that rust off. I made it back out this morning for the last hour of incoming high tide and then a little bit after it shifted. It was deep and a bit slow but there were still plenty of thigh / waist high peaks coming in. Same spot as yesterday. Not the greatest conditions, but it was semi clean and when the right set came in it was fun. The sun rose behind some clouds and lit up the sky with an orange glow and then it finally burst through the clouds. Water feels great, starting to feel like fall is here, won't be long!
Hey DP. Weren't you gonna move to Melbourne or somewhere thereaboots? Hope that worked out good for ya.
Glad to hear you're catching a few fun waves bro! Yesterday I got off work and by the time I made it to the beach, the high tide pushed the wave to shorepound. So I did what any die hard surfer would do - dropped my board in the sand and bodysurfed for an hour till it got dusky and baity. Lots of mini barrells. Halfway into the session, a rainbow appeared to the east. A few minutes later, it turned into a double rainbow. It was surreal. looking out to sea waiting for a wave, seeing the colors overhead. My wife earlier that afternoon handed me a gold galleaon coin from the Atocia that my late dad used to wear as a medallion. She had it attached to a key chain and nautical whistle, so I was stoked and was feeling his presence just a tad. I think it was Antoine who p[osted earlier that just being in the ocean was awesome, waves or not. This little session was Magical.
Hey Kander, glad to hear you're scoring. See if Scobes can get you onto the Marine base in north O'side to that magical jetty. You won't be sorry.
Hey Dogg. I've been doing lots of bodysurfing the inside sandbar this summer when it was either too gutless, windblown, etc. to bring my board out. I never, EVER, see anyone else out there doing it. More for me. We had a rainbow event here last week. Those are always nice. Kinda takes ya away from the BS, don't it?
