Recently, many surfers (5 in 12 months) have been attacked by crocodiles in the Tamarindo area. And I am not kidding. Place kinda sucks as well, imho. Others may opine differently than me, but I am smarter than they are.
Go elsewhere, unless, of course, you want to feed your kids to the crocs to avoid paying college tuitions.....

 

Yup...and the surf would be mo' betta...

 

And now they're being sued for a snake bite in the pool area too, so much wild life at Disney, go there!

 

Nosara, Mal Pais, or Manuel Antonio are best options with wife and kids. MA and Nosara will cost you more but Nosara is best for family and surf but can get crowded. MA has the national park and lots of nature around. Mal Pais is one of my personal favorites. More spread out, more variety of places to stay, consistent surf and can find nice beach break when it is small and some more slope-y waves too depending on part of the beach. Both Nosara and MA are more 'surf only' spots but there are other things around to do and see.

Recommend car for sure no matter where you go. Everywhere is pricey in January.

I hear all the bad rap about Tamarindo but my experience was a good one. I didn't need a car and there are tons of places to stay. We stayed kinda high end on the beach but there were lots of friendly\helpful folks. If you speak spanish it's a plus and even if you try they appreciate the effort but it's not a must in the tourist towns.
Took a boat to witches rock twice and had a blast. I went in july so I don't have any first hand knowledge of being there in January. If you go to Tamarindo take a look at a rock formation 1/2 mile south of river mouth, at high tide it cranks out unbelievable rights It's easy to spot right in front of the Diria hotel. Have a great vacation.

I actually like tamarindo. You can get around to some good spots from there as a home base. It'll be hopping in January too.

Crocs at the river mouth are intense but that spot fires. Even on flat days at high tide there's a mellow wedgy spot over the rocks. You'll def see some wildlife in the water there.

well ive been out of the U.S enough to know on the custom forums that you cant bring more than 10k. counter-fitter as mis seems like a good gig till you get 15years im good on that lol id do 30 in the military before 15 in a brig.

 

I thought Tamarindo was fun when I was there in the late nineties, don't know how much it changed. Last time I went was about 11 years ago and brought a girl with me, we stayed at Sano Bonano in Montezuma, had a great time. I've only been to the carribean side once, Puerto Viejo, it was on, but not sure how family friendly I could call it. Party town big time.

 

I'd probably say Jaco is gonna have the most extracurriculars to do besides surfing. Manuel Antonio is a quick ride down the coast so you can do it as a day trip. Stay for dusk - that's when all of the capybaras come out. From Jaco it's a 20 minute bus ride to Playa Hermosa, so you can wake up early, get barrelled and then join the fam for breakfast. We stayed at Kangaroo hotel for a few nights and i'd highly recommend it. Also it's a small country so don't be afraid to travel around. Arenal was really fun and pretty close to San Jose so it might make a good stop on your way to/from the capital.
