My buddy just went to Playa Negra for two weeks last month. He goes there every year or every other year. Because of his job schedule, he has to go in the summer, although I do think he went in January of February the last time. I went there for one day, back when my buddies and I did a very unorganized surf trip a few years ago. We literally hit multiple places in Central America, for a day at a time. It was chaos and very poorly planned. We need to do a better one next time. I did enjoy Costa Rica, would go again. We keep saying we're gonna do another one of these trips in the spring or summer, which is pretty much the only time myself and a couple others can do this trip, due to work priorities and schedule. We could do it in January or February for a week, but I think we need like 2 or 3 weeks to sort of tour around like we did. It was also quite expensive to plane hop around to all of these places haha. I think you'll like Costa Rica though! Especially in January, or at least more so than in the Spring or something! I went during a November and it was a pretty fun day.
just got back from a trip to tamarindo. unfortunately caught it off swell and I was not impressed at all. strictly surfing wise, tamarindo was not rideable besides longboard. Playa grande which is a short boat ride away was better but was still not what I was looking for. If your mission is to surf I would stay closer to jaco, marberlla, or avellanas. If you want to party then tamarindo is a good time. went to PR last winter and had a way better time surfing. The waves were cranking!
I don t know Ole'Barry. You may be showing your age. Since early 90's I've surfed CR from pavones to playa grande ( never did witches...yet). There is very epic surf to be had. Much more diversity (talking waves here) than PR. Tamarindo is a decent home base for the less traveled with great waves within arms reach. Not sure why you would degrade an excellent surf destination so stonily with your limited experience ( there)??? CR has delivered EVErY time I have gone there. It's a no brainer, and you are under estimating the quality of surf and good times to be had there. Just saying...you may have had a bad experience (I.e, no room service etc). But it's a great country for great surf. <period
I've never surfed PR or Cr in Aug/Sept. Winter in PR is a Good call....late spring and early summer is good call for CR...in my experience
No expert, but the 10 or 12 times I've surfed CR have varied widely in terms of wave consistency. Have surfed there every month except June. Enjoyed the emptiness in September & October. Will not ever again surf during the holidays there. Every week+ surf trek to CR seems laden with at least two days that are just completely unsurfable, for varying reasons. Sometimes have lost three days. Not complaining, 4/7 days surfing, 2-3 sessions per day, beats holy hell out of TPTSNBN. My PR experience was tremendous. Rented The Blue House from Shayne McIntire & surfed Wilderness every day. Maybe we got it really good, maybe it's like that all the time, but it was amazing long rights off that reef. And on one day it was utterly huge. The swell came up within an hour, some of you guys know how fast that can jack up from that trench out there, and it was incredible how massive that swell went for a couple of days. Not too many guys braved that paddle out. Surfed Maria's & that area when Wildo was doing its BabyPipe imitation. Seemed like a lot of people from The Jerz in the water - - stoopidly crowded, not really enjoyable due to crowds.
I like CR in May-June working around any Florida (college spring breaks). Late in the year is less likely to score imo. PR to me is either really good or you get skunked (in my experience). Two different set ups. Winter lows popping off east coasts (pr) and Southern Hemisphere (CR). I've never surfed PR during tropical season...only winter storms so I have yet to explore that aspect.
just dropping in to tell barry to eat a 8===> a grown man telling people to kill themselves on an internet forum? That is pathetic. My best friend killed himself last year. Really funny jacka55.
THERE ARE NO WAVES IN COSTA RICA!!! DON'T GO!!! THE GULF COAST OF THE US IS WAY BETTER!!! http://rovercam.com/
Usually the beaches further south or north of Tamarindo offer better surfing conditions. Furthermore there are too many crocodiles in Tamarindo! If you don't see them at the rocks in the ocean you will find them on the river bank at the river mouth. There have been several attacks. Here is a photo of one in Tamarindo: www.costaricawaves.com/el-estero/ Most of the time the waves are much better at Playa Grande, Langosta and Avellanas. Marbella is another great spot, like "silversurfer" already mentioned. But there are a lot of sharks, watch out! The lineup on the photos looks pretty empty, except the man in gray: www.costaricawaves.com/playa-marbella/
crossed that river mouth in Tamarindo in 2014, WITCH'S ROCK! think I was too stoned to worry about crocs!
idk barry, idk how u can say pr is better than cr.theres a few good breaks in pr but way way way overpopulated.costa is like semi populated.still crowds, but Puerto is a lot worse.and being that they have the same swell window as the eastcoast, its not really a good idea, unless u live in florida and pay 50 bucks for a round trip. cr actually has world class waves.nica is mostly all beachbreaks,a few points and a reef or 2.still better than the eastcoast.basically every spot in central America is better than the east coast.i was thinking of going to el Salvador this spring, but never been there and its a sketchy country, thats where those ms13 guys come from. cant say I ever got drugs abroad.always been too afraid to ask and nobody offered so I'm not saying anything.some ganja would be nice for after surfing.last thing I want to do is end up in a 3rd world jail on a surftrip lol
Im going down to pavones this Wednesday for 8 days with a friend and his mom who lived there and another friend. They've got the place wired, they lived there for 12 years and know almost everyone who lives there's and every break. We're gonna stay with their pro surfer friends and use their boards so we don't have to ship or rent. He was worried, with February being the worst month for waves, that there wouldn't be surf. This is what the first day of our trip is looking like.
