"Marijuana Could Be the Answer to Curing Alzheimer's Disease, Study Shows"

    http://www.fool.com/investing/2016/09/18/marijuana-could-be-the-answer-to-curing-alzheimers.aspx

Here's the meat of the article:

Is cannabis the answer to Alzheimer's disease?
However, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies believe the cure to Alzheimer's disease might come from a readily available substance: marijuana.

In order to test their theory, researchers at the Salk Institute modified nerve cells to produce high levels of beta-amyloid. Researchers then noted that these higher levels of beta-amyloid production led to the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins and eventually nerve cell death. The ongoing death of these nerve cells is what leads to the progressive cognitive decline witnessed in Alzheimer's patients. This itself was an intriguing finding, as it was long believed that an immune-like response, not the proteins themselves, led to nerve cell death.

Now here's where things get interesting. As the researchers noted in their findings, nerve cells in the brain contain receptors that are activated by lipid molecules known as endocannabinoids, which are naturally produced by nerve cells. These endocannabinoids are believed to help nerve cells with their ability to send signals relating to appetite, pain sensation, and memory. Marijuana contains the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (more commonly known as THC), which is similar to endocannabinoids and can activate those same nerve cell receptors. In other words, the researchers at Salk Institute hypothesized that cannabis could block the receptors that lead to the release of pro-inflammatory proteins and prevent nerve cell death.

For their test, the researchers applied THC to nerve cells producing high levels of beta-amyloid. The findings showed that beta-amyloid production was reduced, eliminating the pro-inflammatory protein response and sparing the nerve cells from death.

Understandably, this study would need to be tested in a well-controlled clinical setting to have validity, but it nonetheless offers significant hope that cannabis could hold the key to curing Alzheimer's disease.

FDA requires 2 (two) double blind, controlled, randomized studies to prove this.
Hypothesis sounds nice. Let's see how this goes.

I just lost a friend to Alzheimers-he smoked pot.
    I am still here : I don't smoke pot.

I take preventative measures by making sure I am high at least 75% of the time

    You did not read it:

"At this time, there is not enough evidence to recommend that patients inhale or ingest Cannabis as a treatment for cancer-related symptoms or side effects of cancer therapy (see Question 7)."

Yeah, let's see how this goes for sure. I'm sure it's not a 100% guarantee to cure everybody but I bet with the proper application at an early stage of diagnosis it could be beneficial, to some degree.

    Acral melanomas

    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140820123209.htm

Acral melanomas, the rare type of skin cancer that caused musician Bob Marley’s death, are genetically distinct from other types of skin cancer. Acral melanoma most often affects the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, nail-beds and other hairless parts of the skin. Unlike other more common types of melanoma, it's not caused by UV damage from the sun.

Your sample size is a bit small there...

Which is why, by example, JaQass, I am saying you need two large studies.

I guess you could compare cancer rates of weed smokers vs nonsmokers and get at least a big data set that would tell you something... but definitely not enough. From there you'd have to disaggregate the data, looking at other confounding variables like alcohol consumption, tobacco use, family history, etc.

Cannabis has been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory (see Question 6).

I just read about how some people are suggesting mary jane to combat opiod users. I'm pretty sure it won't work, but I wonder how big the meth head prob is in Denver & Seattle. I had a coworker tell me before i went to Denver earlier this month that there are a bunch of meth heads by the train/rail there, but i didn't see too many of them. I'm going to Seattle in a week, and i believe it's around there where meth/heroine started its track around the US (i heard Portland actually). Either how, i think MJ is necessary to for ex football players and their concussion problems

I really do love you guys, so, sorry if this sure is gonna be rough, but,
Easy for you to say. Until it happens to you. Like someone giving marital advice or child-reaing advice, but never married or had kids.

You use the dope. The pope smokes dope.

I stay with the director of orthopedic oncology and md anderson. They saved my life. I'm still surfing. If anything, i got this rare fibrosarcoma from weed back in the bad old days.

Sorry but throwing around puny opinions with puny research and puny data ain't curing anyone.

I found out yesterday i have a new tumor on my lung. But my genius 25 year-old son who is so upset is still going to chew tobacco and smoke his cigars,

Yet i too knew everything once, but i was young and foolish.
All they all know about cancer is how little they know, and how they have no control over it.
My treatments are really surprising, primitive, yet my doctor is world-reknowned.

That being said, 20 years ago i would have an amputated leg and then still died. Instead i surf. So yes, i thank God for modern medicine.

Yes, research and data, but you wouldn't want to risk untried treatments on yourself.
Walk a mile in our shoes, then get back to me.
Life is short anyway you cut it, and it ain't gonna be pretty, we all gonna walk that lonesome valley.
    Gonna walk it by yourself.

Go to a weed forum. This is surfing.
Now back to our regularly scheduled forum.
    Who here has been...?

Not coming at you dog but I definitely think the herb can help people with that. I know a guy who struggled with OC's but now he's just a pothead. Which leads the question, with which crutch can one have a better quality of life. I'd deffo(Australian for definitely) say weed. I mean I puff too much sometimes and at 35 in terms of activity level I run circles around dudes 10 years younger than me. Maybe I'm manic?

Not doubting there are medicinal elements in cannabis, but the research I've seen indicates most of them are in the parts of the plant that dont even get you high (CBD). Considering THCs effect on memory, claims that it does anything positive for Alzheimer's is very suspect. Smoking anything is counterproductive when it comes to healing...learn the proper dose to eat your Cannabis.
