I think its hilarious to see guys with shortboards on top of their SUVs. its easier and safer for your board just to put it in the trunk
yeah, like the guys you'll see with the red 5'11 that's 3in thick with 1 huge fin on the top of the car.
save your board and put the fins forward. the tail is thickest place on the board and that is what you want the wind hitting first
I turn mine sideways, then accelerate as fast as possible, you will achieve flight. Then you can just fly straight to your destination, and beat all your friends to the waves. It works!
It's funny you said that the guys told you fin forward in the 80's. That is how I was taught and it was so ingrained that if we ever saw a board coming down the road fins back you knew it was a kook . I always thought that was a regional thing but whenever I saw an old surf flick the boards were always fin forward. I still tend to size up a surfer at every step to the water. Pull up in your car fin back, jump out white as a ghost with a rash guard hugging your spare tire and you don't stand a chance. I have been proved wrong many times by using that grading method but we don't need to get into that . I do agree a short board is the way to go, my 5'5" board actually fits in the back seat in an fj cruiser.
I finally broke down and bought a Yakima Rocket Box that is 7' long. I can get 4 boards in there and it locks! Of course I don't use it to arrive at my home break but it certainly comes in handy for the I-95 trip to the Outer Banks. I don't have to unload the boards every night at the hotel/camp either. In order to get 4 boards in it, some fins are forward and some are back. Great place for the wet gear, spare leash and fins as well! It may look a little touristy, fortunately I don't give a s**t. It is what you can do in the water that matters!
As for soft racks: do yourself a favor and splurge and get a rack system (makes a good X-mas gift) and toss the soft racks in your bag or the trunk for other vehicles. Problem solved.
It's okay to get spicy about longboarders. Just like anything you do, you need the right equipment for the job. I love watching wannabe "rippers" flailing around on the inside attempting to catch thigh high waves as I cruise by them on a log. After 45min of splashing around you guys get bored/tired and go home and I'll spend another 2 hours in the water. This is the East Coast, save the potato chip for real swell. Everyone should strap their boards on fins back and down. A new study by Popular Mechanics showed that aerodynamically this is the best way to go. It is the new trend like pink is the new black and gay isthe new...well gay. Try it the next time you go out and everyone will comment on how cool it is; the ladies love it too.
you're a kook, weaver. i don't see any videos anywhere from any of these past swells from any long boarders pulling into any barrels, or dropping in on any overhead+ waves, or going top to bottom on anything. all i see from them is these lame rolling mush waves. show me one decent longboard wave from the east coast this month that one longboarder caught and i'll show you 100 from a shortboard. and if you're going to correct someone about using "trunk" instead of "cargo area", you need a life. i hope your kook longboard goes flying off the roof of your gay car.
Nothing like getting aggro/competitive about board carrying apparati on the wonderful world of the internet. This whole thread has gotten quite kook-ish in my honest opinion. Go ahead and flame away.
If you open the door I'm going to walk in. People say one thing yet mean somethng else. Say what you mean and mean what you say, simple as that. He could have said cargo area and didn't. So I corrected him, and I will continue to do so in here. My post (nor the quote in my post) mentioned nothing about overhead+ waves. My post said thigh high. FURTHERMORE I said you pick the right equipment for the job. Overhead waves call for shorter equipment and I too use a shortboard in that case. So you've reinforced my point and agree with me. Thanks. I'll continue to correct people until they get themselves straight. In the mean time LEARN HOW TO READ. Oh and come up with something better than "You're a kook." Apparently the smartest thing to come out of your mouth is your boyfriend's D!@k. Hope all you want son, my boards won't fly off because I roll "Fins to the rear & Down"....hahaha.
hahaha.. I too see the storm brewing. I prefer clear skies and smooth sailing, but the ignorant will sail full speed ahead into disaster.
this weaver guy must be real smart. did you read his posts. guy's a genius. Talks of other's ignorance and he even pointed out that SUVs don't have trunks..they have cargo holds! What a freaking TOOL! He must be one of those smart guys with no friends. hahahah ya fooking kook!
