Took my CI 6’4” x 21” x 2 ¾ Pod out this past weekend for some play time and went home a very sad surfer. It broke clean in 2 about 30 minutes into my session. I've had the board for about 6 months and ive been riding atleast 3 times a week. I really like this board because of the thickness and the width. I'm about 200lbs and 6ft tall so this is one the first short boards ive found that floats me well and i dont have to sacrifice performance at all.

Long story short: Im thinking about picking up the exact same board, but wanted to get a feel for what you guys have to say about it. If anyone has any recommendations as far as short boards go that are thick, wide and paddle well id appreciate the input. I'm also thinking about getting a quad fish. All input is appreciated.

    Quad

Hey I am 6'1 240 and i have a 7'3 davo quad which i love works in small or lrg. I also ride a 6'2 perfection big guy short board that works like a charm.

Never rode a Davo board before, but ive heard good things about his work. What are the dims on your 7'3 davo? does it float you well and paddle well?

heres what you do go to a local shop and tell them what you want and they will hook you up with a local shapers board which will be just like your pod. and you will be supporting local shaper's and economy.

That's actually what i was thinking about doing. I definately wouldn't mind have a board from a local shaper.

That is what I did, and couldn't be happier. I have a few friends that ride for SOD boards (shaped by Shawn O'Donnell) and decided to follow their lead. I met Shawn a few times and when I was finally ready for a board I went to him and decided to trust him fully. I told him that I knew nothing about shaping boards, that I wanted a longboard that a fat guy like me could noseride, and that I wanted a single fin. Other than that he had full creative freedom. He came back with a 9'5" with a sort of funky outline and rails that were thinner than the rest of the board. I wasn't so sure about it at first, but after riding it a few times, I was very happy.

Shawn is also a bigger guy who rides short board, so I'd be confident that he could shape you something that would work. I plan to go to him when I am ready to try some type of short board (be it a fish, thruster, etc).

I don't want this to sound like I'm advertising for him, I'm just a happy customer. Here is his site http://www.wrightsvilleglassing.com/index.html

I gave it to my little brother. I think he's going to try to have it repaired.

    Firewire

    Hey man...

I would definitely recommend the Firewire Quadfish for you, especially considering your current dimensions on the CI. I have a 6'2 / 21 and a quarter / 3" for mostly smaller days, but it actually surfs really well in bigger more punchy surf. I would say one of the sickest things about it is that it is really flat and paddles like a long board (sick!), but the flex of the board makes it way more performance oriented than any other board I have surfed with similar dimensions. Hit me a message if you would like more info. I am 5'10 and weigh 190 and it floats me too much actually. But that's why I can surf knee high waves with it as well...Good luck.

If I had a CI Pod, I would get one thats 4'8" and 2 3/4" thick and 19 1/2 in wide, I weigh 65 lbs, I'm 4'9" and the CI Pod is my pure style, that and the CI Biscuit.

I looked into the Firewire Quadfish and even borrowed a friends 6'2. Its a good board and it rode great the day i had it and rode it in some choppy 15-20 knot conditions. My only gripe is the board is about $700. I think im going to use this opportunity to get a custom board from a local shaper. Ive been in contact with the guys over at Wrightsville Glassing and im gonna get a custom thru them.

Ask them how much a 4'8" costs.

I spoke with Chuck on the phone and via e-mail today and told him that i was leaning towards a CI Pod type board or the CI Fishcuit(most likely ill get a Pod style) and he recommended someone named Dru. He said Dru used to work for CI and would be the perfect person to do my board.

Raynor surfboards are great Scooter Raynor used to be a professional surfer but some thing like cancer or some cardiovascular problem brought his career to an end. He has 3 sons and a daughter who are rippers. Unfortunately his house was caught on fire about 2 months ago, everyone was okay, but his house isnt. You would help him out getting a board shaped by him. This post was meant to go right after eclipse13's, Im not trying to make you turn from your other decisions or trying to advertise.

If you liked firewire but not stoked on their price, I would go with Jimmy Keith and get one of his carbon fiber rail boards. I was looking at getting a firewire at one point but the price difference was significant, and in principle the same/similar technology. Mine has taken some serious beatings and still holding strong. They use quality materials in their construction, I highly recommend.

Yeah man, I hear you on the price of the Firewire. I sold a board and traded another in to Tony at Sweetwater and got a great deal, so it wasn't bad for me. They are super expensive. I will say this though. Someone said something about Jimmy K's Greenrooms being the same technology...No way at all. Firewire uses something completely different to my knowledge. However, the Jimmy K's are probably even stronger than the Firewire's though (possibly, not sure). Greenroom uses some pretty f-ing insane technology for their bonding that is said to completely get rid of the delam factor and not yellow. You can demo them right out of the shop. SOD's seam more run of the mill, but are local and he is an insane shaper. I think the Greenroom's are also more of a flexible epoxy completely different than the stiff tufflites. SOD has a sick machine that is unmatched though and he can copy pretty much any board you want. If you go out the the factory he will also give you a tour and speak to you forever-super cool guy. Keeping it local is always good....That is the route I will go for my next board. Let us know what you go with, i'm always into hearing how other boards surf and hold up. Sorry for the rant, not trying to advertise either....I heard Dru was a sick shaper....He does Spyder right?
