I am gonna be there for a few days next month and was wondering how the surf is in comparison to DE and OC.
Fairly different from OC/DE in my opinion, the sandbar situation being the main difference. It's kinda deep near the shore, and the sandbar setup is further out. On a small swell, you need to get it near low tide. Overall, the wave is more mushy than steep, so you need a longboard/funshape type of board. You should have it to yourself.
Chincoteague is a clone of Assateague except it breaks better at mid tide than the Maryland end. You will find it relatively uncrowded compared to Assateague and the locals are pretty cool there too. Not as many lazy longboarders as you will find at Assateague either. Hope you catch some swell- good luck!
ya.... So... basically. it sucks... ive checked this place a few times on my way north on swell that i caught firing.. this place was just weired everytime...
It's best at Tom's Cove just to the left as you enter the north parking lot and the locals are cool and friendly. Go low to approx. two hrs before high tide. I've been there a dozen times. Chincoteague is a very cool, vintage island. There is one, sometimes two sandbars to choose from in distance from shore.
Yo Trifin, gotta be hatin' on "lazy longboarders." Give it up dude, we're all surfers and we all are surf because we love the feeling of riding waves. We all choose to surf however we choose to surf and it's all good. Don't be hatin' just because a longboarder sits outside and catches that set wave you were droolin' over... it all equals out and the big thing is the camaraderie and having fun. "gimme two"
