    Where when and why?

It doesn't happen often. I can count 2 1/2 legit blow outs in 30.25 years. A number more where I was well ahead of the burst.

Where were you, when did it happen, and why?

    legit barrel blow outs

I guess it's a half because mine was just a shoulder high spit out. I'd still call it the wave of my life so far though. Was at my favorite beach in Monmouth county this fall. On my 5'6" catch surf skipper cause my real boards needed to be fixed. Went for DP in the morning and it was alright. Booked it straight from school back to the same beach. Glassy/light offshore and no one around yet. Took off deep and remember clearly thinking to myself "at least I'll get a good view for a second or two" and before I knew it I shot out from inside and just fell of the shoulder of it like a corpse in awe of what happened. Stayed out till dark too. One of the best days of the year for me so far actually

Oh Yea....... off shore wind causing walls that just hang there. Easy entry, wait for the wall, turn into it, duck in,
pure silence. Spit out the other side so hard it blew me and the board over the back of the wave. What a rush, way to easy. Secret spot.

Depends on context...when you get spit out, it literally feels like you are getting blown out of the barrel. But I will concede that blown out is generally used as you stated.

Nice. Never surfed jersey but have seen some waves "spit" on some of those sandbars.

seen waves spit all over in NJ and traveling but there are few waves in the world that will
Actually blow/spit you right out of a barrel. A big wave at pipeline will literally push you out of the barrel when it spits. Must be an incredible feeling.

Nica and Indo. In NH you have to contort your body to squeeze into the little almond shaped barrels they have here, and they never blow out. NJ has some proper barrels, and the cape.

Can't say I've ever been spit out the barrel... where the force of the collapsing wave literally forces enough air out the tube to blow you, and a bunch of water, out the barrel. I've never felt that "push" from behind, but I have come out getting sprayed in the back and back of the head. Pretty sure a lot of us have, but to say that's getting blown out... like at Pipe or Fiji... is stretching it.

LOL...you guys are over analyzing the term "blow out" or maybe I should not have used it at all. I just wanted to hear some cool stories about when you where Spat out of a wave. Certainly Chopes and Pipe are going to have a more severe climax and it's all relative.

I have surfed pipe (not second reef or anything mental), but I have been spit out of a nice (I would say in the 6-8' range). I have had a drainer at Playa Hermosa that was a mutant late drop to barrel and was spat out with some fury. Also, over an Indo reef, I had multiple barrels that spit and one in particular that seemed to "blow" with some force.

I think that if you are in a barrel and get "spit out", you feel the "blow" of the wave. Like you are saying LB you felt the push from behind....that is all I am talking about. Some are going to have more push than others. But, to get spit out...it needs to be a legit barrel to begin with.

Anyway, just looking to hear some stoke from you guys....

Nabbed a big one at a great spot in NJ. Kind of a novelty spot. It was big one of the other big swells around doomsday time. I was in shape and confident. Took off and nailed the bottom turn.

I was standing straight and it just got crazy quiet except for the rumbling off the lip hitting the surface. Everything got dark. Looked over and time paused as I thought "now this is a barrel....THIS. IS A BARREL"

Stood in in down the beach and to my delight it went from dark to light came flying out. (Dude you made it out! Had and huge party in my brain)

Did a check turn into a little inside barrel and got my head chopped off.

Wave of my life. Big legit stand up barrel.

No idea if I was blown out though. I think so.

Nice Stoke Bubs....I like how you were talking to yourself when you came out of the barrel in 3rd person "Dude You made it out"!

    Stoked, dude!

Your story reminds me of my first big standup barrel, too. Big outside set wave... drop in... scream down the line, just going straight, full speed trim. Make it to the inside where it just opens wide up and gets super hollow and dredges over the sandbar. I remember just standing there, straight up, not doing anything but standing there... watching big chunks of foam flying around me and over my head inside the tube.

In my mind, I was like... "this is the biggest barrel of my LIFE!" That was probably 30 years ago, at least. I remember it like it was yesterday.
