The Kiwis are installing concrete slabs underwater at beaches, with huge magnets within the units. They are pretty convinced that the technology deters sharks from snacking on the human virus swimmers. You might want to research the Ampullae of Lorenzini. This isn't new info, obviously. Or, listen to guys named Barry and Zippy The ampullae of Lorenzini are special sensing organs called electroreceptors, forming a network of jelly-filled pores. They are mostly discussed as being found in cartilaginous fish (sharks, rays, and chimaeras); however, they are also reported to be found in Chondrostei such as reedfish and sturgeon.
Lol. Not Bradley....mainly Squan and Belmar. Sounds stupid I know but considering great whites pass us by on their way to feed on the revived seal population further north, along with that white shark nursery they found off of Long Island....seems like the odds, as low as they are, may be increasing a tad?
So true, the amount of people and lack of surf etiquette seems to be so much more of a danger factor these days. I'll take a nip on the knee any day over some of the idiotic behaviors I've seen in the lineup (not that I'm volunteering to be shark bate)
Read the manufacturer's disclaimer: it says the Sharkbanz is ineffective against Whitey because of it's mode of attack is to ambush it's prey from below, making them distinctively different than almost every other shark. It goes on to say that it is impossible to overcome Whitey because of that very peculiar habit. But they're apparently willing to stand behind the technology against Bulls, Tigers and all the nipper variations. EDIT: Holy sh!t, just watched the vid. Apparently the technology is not 100% yet lol. Pretty sure that's a Bull, for sure it aint no Whitey. To the OP: Dude you're better off painting "Nemo" on the bottom of your bort, pretty much the same scientific technology being applied lol. Not much difference between those wrist magnets and that CopperFit knee brace that Brett Favre is hawking like a sideshow geek.
Im actually convinced that sharks and fish in general don't like their magnetic fields disrupted. I just doubt that a shark intent on striking, beyond the range of that magnet which can't be more than a foot would be deterred from striking, especially if the shark was moving at 35 miles an hour. Now if you told me that those things were tethered to a generator on the beach and emitting a magnetic field with a ten foot diameter I would believe it was worth it. Unfortunately I believe a 300 foot length of wire with a gauge large enough to supply that much current might be a hinderance to ones surfing.
Someone should be willing to give it a go. I heard that salt water doesn't conduct electricity so it should be completely safe.
Good points....I'm also skeptical because considering a sharks testosterone levels when in feeding/territorial mode, I really cant see anything slowing them down when in attack mode?
Its weird, as much as I think about sharks lately, as soon as I paddle out the thoughts fade away completely....so I feel pretty confident I think. Although my buddy and I did have an encounter with a seal in Belmar last winter that, while as comical as it was, was a reminder that we were not in a pool so to speak. Nice size seal popped up right between us while looking out at the horizon waiting for a set......@ 6'3 290 lbs I've never seen my buddy pop up onto his board (from laying down) so fast in all the time I have surfed with him! Not that I was calm and cool but man it was entertaining to say the least. I still chuckle about it
Yes, but there are a lot of myths in circulation about which species has the highest levels. I'm no expert so I have no idea whether its the white shark or the Bull...or the tiger shark for that matter? And from what I understand when not in feeding mode the levels are actually pretty low...I think.
I think the solution may be for you to quit surfing all together. That way no chance of shark attacks and you can stop getting in the way all the time.
Hey Hobie78! So why not surf Bradley?? I mean - we all know that the surf is always better in BELMAR - but really, I used to live in Bradley and surfed there for many many years.... so where about do you live? I was on 4th ave... there's another guy on here that lives in Bradley- I sold him a bike once, he's cool. Anyways- you really bought one of those things?!?
