I think he was straight edge before that term was even coined. Love that song, he's got that great voice and delivery, definitely pre punk. Not trying to be a crooner like Robert Plant or Roger Daltry. Even Iggy Pop in the first Stooges album sounds more like a singer.

    He's stoned, Hippy Johnny.....

It's funny. My best friend at the time is actually who got me into punk music back in 84. He was killed in an accident when he was 24, which will be 24 years this year. I still remain best friends with his brother and his family is still like my family. I lived with them for years after my parents moved to Florida a few months after I graduated high school. He got into it from his father's best friend, who is now 68 years old. He's the guy I've posted about who lives on Anna Maria Island/Bradenton Beach and has the cigarette boat and also surfs. He's a bit older than a lot of the guy's that were in some of the earlier punk bands, but he first started listening to it back before the music was even really known as punk rock.

With the bands you and other's have mentioned, like the Stooges, The Modern Lovers, a few of those bands. Then he started listening to The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers, and this guy was about 30 years old or close to it already by the time those bands started putting out music. He didn't live by us at the time, but he would come and visit my friend's family all the time because their dad and him grew up together. So all the ''Old'' people at the time (old to us was like 30's like our parents were haha) were listening to either Oldies music from the 60's or the popular Rock bands like the Stones or Kiss. And he was listening to this punk music and he looked and acted like he was a teenager, not too much older than us and listened to all this weird music haha. He still looks and acts way younger than a guy of almost 70. You'd never know he's well into being a senior citizen. Sometimes he'd come by and tell us a new band he saw or got into. He was in the Coast Guard and traveled around and has lived all over the place. We'd always be all excited when he'd come visit and talk to us about music. I remember saying ''This guy is your dad's age? He looks like he could be the same age as some of the guys we go to shows with that are a little bit older than us''. I remember him playing some records for us and in front of my buddy's dad and his dad would laugh and be like ''This is all noise! I did happen to catch a fug and a sh!t in there, but can't understand any of the other words! What is this music you're bringing over to the kids?!''. And I remember he ****ing hated Disco too, which was mostly over with by the early 80's. He also loved bands like Iron Maiden and old Black Sabbath, which is cool too.

My dad loved Led Zeppelin and my mom loved The Doors. They were only 19 and 20 years older than me, so Zepp and The Doors were big right around the time they graduated high school. I was big into Led Zeppelin and Kiss back in the late 70's and early 80's when I first started paying attention to music.

I think I'm turning into your buddys dad.
Classic rock was my first love as a pre teen as well. I was 10 or 11 with Pink Floyd and The Who t shirts. And I still love all that stuff. 70's era Stones is currently in heavy rotation, can't get Hand Of Fate out of my head. My big gripe is classic rock stations, they suck. Same focking songs, over and over. And cost of shows. I've seen Tom Petty and Neil Young over the last few years and it's not cheap, plus parking and overpriced beers. Van Halen with David Lee Roth a bout 5 years ago cost me a small fortune. I could have bought a new bort and taken it on a trip. Only exception was Joe Walsh, cheap tix and he was killer.
I guess it's one way punk has stayed true is the cheap shows and small venues(for the most part). The Café in Newport RI and the Met in Pawtucket have so many old school bands come through, many we have mentioned, and tix are never over 25 bucks, park on the street, drink beer at regular bar prices, and stand far from the pit. Fock yes.

I really don't go to concerts in huge venues like that, but I'll tell you, I did catch The Police twice on the reunion tours they did in the late 00's. My buddy had already gotten tickets to one of their dates at MSG in 07, right after the tour started. But he had to go to the second show because his friends he was going with could only do that show. But he wanted to go to the first show the night or two before also, so he asked me to go. He pretty much begged me and was like ''Dude, you told me they were one of the first bands you listened to. You gotta come with me to this! We gotta get the tickets NOW! They'll sell out in 2 minutes!'' I didn't wanna spend hundreds to see them, but he eventually cracked and offered to pay. So I said I'd go with me, he makes a little more than I do, I'll just say that much haha. I agreed to go after he said he'd pay. So I took the train to the Penn Station from Secaucus and met him and we went into the Garden together. I liked it so much, I actually went and saw them at the Arts Center in Jersey about a year later. It was one of their last shows before they split up for good. The friend I went with the first time went and my other two other friend's went. We found cheap tickets online. The one friend was going to a bunch of their New York area shows. He was going to see them at Jones Beach the next week or whatever. But we found cheap tickets on stub hub for the Arts Center and went. I paid for my own this time and two other friend's decided to go just to go, even though they weren't huge fans or anything. I thought they were a little better at the Garden the first time I saw them, but they weren't bad at the Arts Center. It was nice, since it's an outdoor venue and they weren't bad. Probably just exhausted and drained after a long year of touring.

I usually think name dropping is lame, but I've known Walter from Quicksand since 1985, back before he was in Gorilla Biscuits.

I'll admit that I'm not too into some of his most recent music (his latest band is good, just not something I'm really into), I do love almost every band he's ever been in. Walking Concert, his band from back around 2003-2006 was the one I couldn't really get into at all, and even he had a couple decent songs in that band.

I've seen Quicksand a few times since they've been sporadically playing together again and doing some shows over the last 5 years. I remember seeing them as a 5 piece back in 1990 and when they were still Moondog and I can't for the life of me remember who the lineup was, other than Walter and Tom Capone. I think Armand from Sick Of It All was the drummer.

Quicksand also had a really good bunch of unreleased demos from 98 and 99, which never came out and probably never will. But they're all over the internet and pretty easy to find. I wish they made it much bigger than they did. Walter is one of the greatest musicians I've had the pleasure of listening to. Even his meh stuff like Walking Concert was still pretty damn good compared to a lot of music.

While I don't listen to them, I'm glad to see that he's (Sergio Vega) now the bassist for the Deftones. Even though he got the job after their original bass player had an accident and then eventually passed away years later, from what I understand.

I don't think they're as successful as they've been in years past, but I like seeing talented musicians rewarded with full time gigs and being able to make money off of music. And Quicksand had 4 of the most talented musicians there was, though they never managed to really get on the radar to a huge audience, even though they put out two major label releases.
