Looking for some SI advice: bought myself the Shaguar last week. I'm starting to buy all the parts that I want to be added on. I know about Thule and Yakima, probably $200-$300 when it comes to roof racks. I think the one i had on my previous car was Thule and the clips cost somewhere btwn $50-$100. I measured the roof of the car a couple nights ago, and it came to be around 51", side to side. I'm seeing on Ebay, where i'm just about buying all the parts so far, that there are universal racks for $55-$75. Some of them list that they fit my car's type, Vanden Plas, and it looks to be 50" bars in length. Anybody got any bad stories from these universal racks (generic) that i should be cautious of? Also come to think about, should the racks be extended past the 51" mark? does that even matter? i wouldn't think so, but maybe i'm not thinking of a certain scenario jag.jpg

    ultimate surf wagon bro!

I'd go with Thule or Yakima. You're going to feel better about strapping boards up there and, to me at least, that's worth the extra $$$.

I got some Inno brand racks off amazon about a year ago. When all was said and done I saved about $300 compare to thule/yakima. They are solid too, I can grab the racks and shake my car around. They came with locks and everything.

...oh yeah i forgot to add: They recommended 48 inch crossbars for my Civic, but I went with 54 inch. They extend out a little further past the "feet" and look more rugged. Still havn't hit my head on them either :)

thanks HH. yea, i've always heard Yakima or Thule with roof racks, but i couldn't think the product is that more superior. Only thing i worry are the quality of the clips obviously, but that happened with the last roof rack purchase which was Thule

that's just pure f'n luck man. i've been to that Goodwill plenty of times and never saw racks out there. it's like seeing surfborts at the pawn shop in Mt. P, nobody thinks about checking pawn shops anymore just ol craigslisp. it won't be hard to pinpoint me; i'm pretty sure i'll be the only jag owner with roof racks

Does that car have rain gutters to clamp racks onto?

I've owned Thule and Yakima racks; but right now I have a set of Rhinos. Like the Rhinos way better. So much easier to fit.

The clips on mine are about 2.5 inches wide, and made of just under a 1/4 inch thick metal. I feel very confident even with a longboart strapped on going 65mph. I actually started a similar thread a while back. there is a pic of my rack somewhere in there. http://www.swellinfo.com/forum/show...-your-rack!/page2&highlight=show+us+your+rack

HH, i remember that thread - a great non-descript thread full of boobies. lost my train of thought or purpose for that matter looking into it. I was hoping to not hear any stories of crappy racks whereas the clips would unbuckle in transit

thanks Z, i'll look into more namebrand options too like Rhino. Forgot all about those guys. I used softracks for when i made it around town b/c the hard racks would make considerable noise - both my old and new car have sunroofs. otherwise, i'd be ok with hard racks on at all times

Rhino rax are way quieter than the ol school square Thules or round yaks. On par with Yakima whisbars

I have no complaints about the Yakima racks. They hold up well and the locking system keeps them in place with no worries.
