Peru: an inside view

Sick dude! yea its pretty awesome down here, just got a full meal at the supermarket in the most expensive part of lima for less then 7 bucks including beer. Chicken, lentils and rice. Not bad man, looking forward to the price drop outta town but **** man my local burrito spot in oregon doesnt have a meal for less than 10 bux. And theres local menus around town for like 2 or 3 bux. I would travel here even if i couldnt surf just for the quality and price of food. And the eye candy around here aint bad either.

Everyone thinks im crazy for not partying but im pretty commited to my girlfriend for now and id rather surf all day and read books all night. Theres a reason my nickname is oltrev and im only ****ing 24. Save the money for travelling. Still an alcoholic though, it comes with the territory being a firefighter.

Definitly not travelling at night, or even really going out of my accomodations. I can see how that could lead to waking up on ice with a kidney missing or worse...

Yea man just got to punta Hermosa and surfed the wedgy inside right at playa Norte and scored a few chest to head peelers at la isla all the way to the sand. Fun tranquillo stuff.

 

Sup homies! Its been quite an interesting few days since I posted last. I went down to Punta Hermosa and finally scored. Stayed at this place called the Punta Hermosa Surf Hostel. One block away from the surf spot La Isla, and run by this super chill shredder/family man named carlos. Got my private room for 30 bux a night had a tv and hot shower king sized bed, balcony yadayada. rooftop lounge area overlooking the ocean and totally populated by surfers.

Didnt have my stick so carlos was nice enough to let me use his whole quiver for a nominal fee, which I did for two days when the waves were small. Surfed La Isla every morning, on his fish, senoritas every afternoon on his thruster, and returned to La Isla for a surf till dark. Probably logged at least 6 hours plus per day in the water.

Got washed up on the rocks at Senoritas (the urchins suck balls, still pulling spines out of my fingers) but my homie showed me how to dig em out before they get infected.

The food is absolutely amazing, you can get a 3 course meal with beer for less than 3 dollars, the only down side is that you WILL get the runs automatically at somepoint down here (whats a good third world surf trip without a case of the ****s right).

As far as the old "bring your board/buy your board" debate that was going on in the "longboards to chicama" thread I think I solved the issue.

DONT BRING A BOARD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Fly directly to Lima, take a reliable car service or score a ride, or take the bus if your feeling like it down to Punta Hermosa. Snag a taxi or publico to Feeling Board surf shop outside of town along the old Pan American Highway. They have hundreds of used and new boards for extremely cheap because of all the gringos that bought there boards down and didnt want to pay to bring them home.

I scored a slightly used Al/merrick proton 6'0 for $100. Im talking entirely white, new track pad, no buckles, almost out of the shaping den board. There were countless others like it there, longboards etc. Yea its kinda small, and I may need to trade it up for a step up at some point but the fact of the matter is i now have my poker chip that I could easily resell for 200 or more in the states.

All the other shops I ran into dont compare, even in Lima, although you can get new Klimax boards for 250 bux in Lima and get a multitude of different shapers to make you a stick for around 300 dollars.

Last night I surfed the Isla it was well overhead and pumping, no wind with only a handful of guys out. absolutely amazing, totally maxed out my new merrik, got the slaps going down on the bottom turn.

Met a sick old homie who was the original Brazillian on the North Shore Oahu in the 70's. Surfed pipe, crashed at jerry lopez's beach house on the reg, first sponsered man in Brazil etc. Hes still in the industry filming, and organizing the ISQ down here in South America. Showed me all the pictures to back it up. Still can shred way harder than i ever could at age 60. Smoked me down before the La Isla session, and as soon as I got high (first time since ive been here) the swell jumped up and the spot turned on.

Gotta love those magic windows. Tommorrow I leave for Cuzco, Macchu Picchu, and some long awaited p u s s y from my girlfriend. Left my board in Punta Hermosa and will return at the begining of march to pick up where I left off.
