Well, we make enough references I think it's time to start seriously discussing the many strands of our good, and thorough, beloved film.

Bubs, you just saw it yesterday, whaddaya think?

Also, to begin open discussion..something I've been thinking about...

Smokey wudn't over. I've come to the conclusion that Walter accused Smokey of being over the line as a deliberate deflection. He was 20 minutes late, to a league game, The Dude was not happy. The Dude was also giving him a hard time for bringing a Pomeranian bowling, watching said Pomeranian while Cynthia and Marty Ackerman were in Hawaii, and his whole sick Cynthia thing in general. He's Polish Catholic for fock's sake. Thoughts?

Was Donnie there? I can't remember if Donnie was there. I think Donnie would have been the one to ask.

    Phucking Donnie.

I've never seen it. BUT, I do like the Gypsy King's version of Hotel California on the soundtrack!

    Dude,
Smokey was over the line. Walter deflected for sure but wouldn't fabricate a falsehood to do so. He is no amateur Seldom.

It's crazy how the phrase, "The Dude abides," has a cult like following. Three words and people try to dissect it and figure out the deep meaning.

I had never previously considered that Walter's assault on Smokey was a deflection because he was late. Nice observation. I simply thought that was consistent with how seriously Walter took league play. Throughout the film he places emphasis on the importance of league games. I just love that no matter how out there Walter is during the film, he turns out to be right about it all.

Thank ye Sir...now I love Walter, as do we all..and in all other cases he takes league play dead serious, but to be 20 mins late becaue of Cynthia. Am I right?

    *cue the Dude*

You're not wrong seldom, you're just an...

If there's one thing he learned in Vietnam..

Also just for the record, I'm not convinced about all this more just throwing it out there. That thought had not occurred to us, Dude.

I mean no disrespect to Walter, and I hope you don't consider my thoughts over the line.

And man, those Dudeist Papers(papers, business papers) you put me onto were great, especially that duality of Walter and the Dude one.

the dude surmises that Smokey's "toe slipped over a little". perhaps this a lead?

also, is it odd that Donnie is a surfer?

It is odd that Donnie was a surfer. You would have thought he'd have mentioned it during the film. I would have if I was Donnie. Walter would have probably told him to STFU. Anyone see Jeff Bridges speech at John Goodman's ceremony where he received his Hollywood star? Here you go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LxOWoHxAAY

I heard a theory that Donnie never actually existed and was a figment of Walter's imagination. A coping mechanism for him to deal with his PTSD from Vietnam, maybe an alter ego for Walter.

The theory doesn't seem to hold water upon re-watching the movie with this in mind, but you can tell that in most instances everyone tends to ignore Donnie and very rarely (maybe only once) speak directly to him, which probably lead to the rumor.

It's a fun speculation if you need an excuse to rewatch it, but I never gave it too much credence.

I know you're just keeping your mind limber. I would never think you fatuous.

And you know that when I checked the forecast and saw a dude quote I knew who started it and of course had to respond. Other wise I would have got a rash man.
