So we're traveling to Florida in a coupe weeks and due to a new addition to the family, room in the car is tight so I'm forced to put my boards on the roof, 2 boards 9ft Lb and a 5'8 SB. Now how fast can I realistically go with these strapped to the roof, 70, 80, 90? I drive fast but just want an idea of how fast people usually go. Also any proper knot tying techniques for my straps haha
Cool, I got a bag that will fit both boards. Just seems sketchy with the long board over 65 mph you see the front fluttering up and down on my car going to the beach normally, but hopefully the board bag would help stop that.
What kinda whip you got? Fastest on the block I hope lol But seriously, how close / far apart are the roof racks? If close together due to small vehicle, be more careful. Don't put the boarts too far forward allowing the wind to get under them too much.
If the top is fluttering you prob need to reevaluate your knot tying techniques. Are you really tying knots? For long trips you need some ratchet straps. I use bungees for short trips and under 50ish mph and they work fine. Do you have roof racks? Bouncing boards will definitely add stress to the trip.
we are taking the kia sorento there it has decent roof rack built in, that's the family car, I do have some play cars that are quick but not practical for moving a surf board anywhere.
Wait you use bungees?? That seems sketchy at 25 mph. Also, ratchet straps?? those ratchets are easily capable of generating enough pressure to dent or crack the glass on your board... so be careful. I have always used just a regular ass tie down with a cam buckle. DPSUP has some physics behind how close together your roof racks are. This creates stress concentrations. The further apart the more stable your birds will be.
I drove over the Chesapeake bay bridge and tunnel in a crazy storm with high winds with an LB on the roof. Due to winds we weren't going fast, but regardless the boards were fine. Normal driving conditions.... ill go around 70ish with a LB on the roof with no problems. Probably could go faster. Just make sure there secured nicely and you'll be good
Nice tip! I'll have to spread the racks out on my Honda CR-V for maximum stability. Done the trip up I-95 with all types of boards on top. Kayak straps with the rail protectors against the buckle are all you need. I never go over 75 unless I'm passing Fred Sanford & Son, but never had a problem, except a rail ding once from tightening it up too much with no board bag, on an old fiberglass log.
Thanks, and hope it helps keep your boarts safe. I've learned the hard way on many of these things. As a result I have gotten pretty good at ding repairs lol
