I heard the existing one will be dismantled and replaced and extended further out. Another rumor is that a new pier will be built beside the existing one, then the existing one will be dismantled. The pier is one of the better spots along Folly. I don't think it'll be ruined long term but definitely disrupted.
oh, that spot will be ruined...until they build the new pier...and a heavy swell or two rolls through and redistributes the sand out from the pylons
Always have wondered why communities don't build more piers. At a cost of $7 mln (as stated in the article) or whatever the amount is, that doesn't sound exorbitant. Benefits: surfable waves, which brings in more surfers during spring, fall & winter months to surf & spend money in 'the low & shoulder seasons'; as well as bringing in more fishermen, more sightseers, more money & all of the above would bring more retail sales taxes into the local coffers. Perhaps a simplistic view from a simpleton. But I can't help but wonder when the communities are going to wake up to the fact that surfers spend serious money over extended periods of time (years) in pursuit of their addiction, er, passion. Ergo, why not build the things that create the waves.....?
I like piers but they aren't that popular up here in New England. Not sure why, plenty of heavy weather in Florida, CA, etc... where they have them.
