I know it has been spoke of before. yet I wanted to see if we could be more specific and maybe start a new chapter/,<<maybe not new,>>> a more focused effort to document what may lay right off our coast. First we must admit most of us (myself included), are in no position to make these explorations. You got to have a boat or access to one. Got to have the money to fill the tank and you got to have the time, needed for/involved in such an endeavor. Those shots alone makes your mind start to wonder some about what could be, But this is not really close to what I am thinking of. What I want to know is if anyone can confirm the existences of a shoal around 5 miles SE of the OC inlet, Off of AI actually. This shoal is said to be only 8 to 10 feet in depth and flanked by water that is 60 to 80 feet in depth. It is said that some good fishing goes down off the area and it is a well known spot for local waterman. Any thoughts/info would be appreciated.
Roamer Shoal, which is a lighthouse about 2.5 miles due north of Sandy Hook. I fish for bass there all the time, and I've seen it "surfable" a few times; not sure I'd ever bother though. Too many morons with boats who don't pay attention
Not to sure about your the shoal you asked about, but I can tell you this... The eastern shore gets sick. I've done a bit of exploring via jet ski out there, and this is what I can tell you from my experience. Towards the bottom of smith island is a really good long left. You can see it peeling on google earth, and it seems to pick up lots of swell, i bet the spot breaks good on any swell. If your really itching to surf some secluded shoal type break, I would just make a bee line for here. There is also a left point at the bottom of Cobb Island. Once again, you can see the wave from google earth, which is what sparked my quest. This break is sick! Granted I went on pretty solid SE Swell, but this place was just sand sucking barrels. The island itself is crazy too, a couple abandoned structures on it, an abandoned marina, and a pretty large shipwreck. I will say that taking a boat around these areas is probably no the greatest idea. With the jet ski, I can go anywhere. Hell, I always just beach the thing, and push it back into the water. Basically, you would be running aground like crazy even trying to get close to most of the these spots. Go on google earth and check out those spots I told you about. Then find yourself a jet ski, and a solid SE swell and your golden. Trust me, you will be pleasantly surprised. P.S. Sorry Micha... I know you always catch some **** when I chat up these spots.
Tons of sharks out on the shoal and a dolphin told me that stingray that got the crocodile hunter vacations there in the summer.
yes, I have seen the google earth shots and agree. I have been researching these spots as best I can for three or four years now. But I really do not think anyone should worry about some great influx of heads looking for these spots. You got to have the time, money, boat and right swell to score those spots. I am more interested in the spot close to OC. And I did hear that the sharks like the spot as well. they said it is no problem to anchor next to the shoal I am speaking of. I just wish I could find someone who may know what the best conditions/swell directions that would work and best wind directions for said spot. I think I may be able to have/found someone take me out there. I first thought is that the best swell direction would be from the south, but who knows? Thanks for the feedback.
When I first saw that pic Shawn took during Hanna I thought it was sickest thing. But looking back, I would say in town was bigger and was barreling a lot more. I don't think the shoals would really be worth the effort.
you are right on about the size for that day, but they where trying something new, which was cool. Of course we all know how it truned out bad in the end, sorry to hear. But I really do not think you can compare that spot to where I am trying to get to. Five miles off the coast, in 60 to 80 feet of water, with a fix shoal that does not move which is only 8 to 10 feet below the surface. I can imagine the right swell would be throwing unknown sickness. I may be able to get out there before it get to cold, just to fish, not surf, and to check it out.
Totally agreed. It takes a lot of dedication and the right equipment to score those spots, which I at times am lucky enough to have. It took me years of google earthing to get the confidence to even attempt charging out to these spots. **** is totally serious out there. Your riding on a jet ski, a machine notorious for breaking down. You ride for 30-40 min's out to inihabitaed islands, and surf in waters where you know massive fish and god knows what else are swimming below. Its an adventure to say the least!!!!!
I saw some waves breaking a couple miles off the coast of cape henlopen in Delaware during hurrican bill, also some some guys jet skiing the shoals off the OC Inlet
