Hello from your neighbour to the N, Always kinda lurk and check the wind/pressure maps and dominant wave period and posts/ videos etc. on the this site, it's nicely done. Have noticed an Xtra Long Period Swell on this and many other forecast sites.. Having just arrived at our cottage in N.S., You gotta think the cobblestone points and reefs are gonna lap it up non? Also seems to last for days.. Anyone seen this before? I sure haven't seen such a long period persistent push like this, except for Pacific or very south Atlantic stuff. It looks like this could be surfable swell.. Anyone?? Thanks!
You looking late next week? There is forecasted a massive swell in the South QAtlantic and some sites are calling for it to reach the east cost of US next week,,,pretty rare and pretty far away from source....it has happened before....
I've seen buoy readings of .7' at 18 seconds while staying in PR that never showed in the line up. If they did it went unnoticed as such a long sell period usually means very inconsistent. Only thing to do is be positive and just check it. I would think incoming mid to high tide would show it at the right spot. Good Luck!
Unrelated but just made me think.... Yesterday I was checking some cams on the surfersview.com and the report for Cape May was 7-11 feet. I LOL'd at that one. It was clearly 1-2 feet when looking at the cams. That definitely had to be a gaffe.
As a VB/occasional OBX surfer, the greater the period equates to greater height only if you do not have long continental shelf interactions. Long period swell may refract along a conducive bathymetry, but "shallow" continental shelf time leads to greater friction for longer period and ultimately a wave less likely to make it to the line up. 0.5 @ 21secs might mean something for a pacific island but the reach of a waves energy at a period of that scale is exponentially deeper than the 8-13 sec the EC generally thrives with.
Hi canuka Welcome Great question for someone searching for surfborting I agree- for a long period swell you really need some kinda continental shelf action. There are not too many around, but there is one in Belmar NJ. If that swell hit Belmar, it would go off- best waves of a lifetime. In fact, the forecast for this weekend looks like it will be flat everywhere- except Belmar will be pumping all weekend long. You know, You may want to do yourself a favor-sell your cottage and buy a nice place in Belmar, where the waves are always good. I just saw a nice, quiet bungalow for sale, right around the corner from Djais!
Indeed, starting late next week...Usually they are just blips that don't materialize. I guess we'll see. Thanks!
Hi, that swell IS gonna hit Belmar man, gonna be epic. Trading in a custom built cottage on 10 private acres overlooking the atlantic for a bungalow in Jersey is hard to fathom.. Although it is consistent and the pizza is good.. Hmmmm?
You're on the money with that thought, thanks. The points and reefs up here love the long period stuff. I'm gonna be here, so we'll see what gets served up.
Ah, yes the continental shelf thing, very true.. Wave decay hey..? Lotsa shelf up here, however also deeper reefs and points that love the long period swells. Thanks for your comment, good insight. Would a 2ft swell @ 18 seconds equate to about chest high?
Hey friendly northern Neighbour, kindly post a pic of 2 if that swell makes it into your lineup. Always been curious about your area. Thanks in advance Edit: 2'@ 18 secs would be waist to shoulder on the sets at my local in the PNW
I'll try to do that. It's great up here, can be fickle as hell but if you have time to wait things out with winds, fog, tides etc, you will score top shelf waves. It's ridiculous how perfect some set-ups are.
