Check out some of those intervention shows on TV. Those people have zero control of themselves at a certain point. Instead of a slave to waves, they are a slave to the bottle.

Yeah, trev, that's not true at all. People are different from one another. You can handle it (for now), some others can't. Alcoholism like other substance addictions is a disease. It has nothing to do with will power. As somebody else stated, alcohol is one substance the withdrawl from which can kill you.

My brother is an alcoholic. He did a lot of fukked up shiit before cleaning up and was on a totally destructive path. He's been sober for 30 years or so. Still attends meetings regularly. He knows one drink will likely be the end.

Personally, I don't drink these days. I've had plenty already in my lifetime. I also did a lot of fukked up shiit, some of which I regret, some I'm lucky to have survived. I quit because I just stopped enjoying how it made me feel and ruining a perfectly good day because I consumed too much the previous night wasn't fun anymore.

Bubs, as almost everyone else has said, get some help please. It took my brother several attempts before he cleaned up for good. He had to try a few different AA groups before he found the right mix of people. It may seem difficult to give up your old friend in the bottle but if you don't you will give up everything else.

trev- As someone who had an alcoholic father who had an alcoholic mother, I call BS on the whole moderation and willpower thing. I luv ya man, but you are way off base. It may be working for you now, but it will get you eventually. And the fact that someone who surfs as well as you do has to have a couple to loosen up and get over the fear should tell ya something.

bubs - get some help dude. You know in your hear you need it, anything else is just rationalization out of fear.

    Bubs, this concerns me.

Start puffing herb and put the drink down. Also, and I'm dead serious...you might need some type of major psychedelic breakthrough to end this pattern, followed by a steady regime of microdosing to reinforce and maintain.

If you think I'm kidding, read about the guy who founded AA.

    Get well man.

If alcohol is the standard of legalisation, just about all mind altering substances should be legal.

Someone's going to twist my words here. It wouldn't be SI if it didn't happen.

I kinda agree with trev. Moderation is key. Now if you have a problem already..... this doesn't hold true. If you have a problem cut it out entirely. But I'm similar to trev. I drink almost everyday. But i rarely get beyond a good buzz except for certain occasions. A beer or two every night. If i get out of work early, maybe 3. Over the course of 5 or 6 hours though. I stop whenever i want. For months at a time. It's not a problem. Some of you guys make it sound like if you black out more than a few times in your life, your an alcoholic..... have none of you ever been in your 20s? My point is moderation and self control is totally a game changer. Sadly it seems like you either have it or you don't. And if you have a problem already, moderation will not help you. Cut it out.

My mom's an alcoholic. I think. Its really weird actually. I'm 27. My entire life she's gotten home from work and drinks. All weekend drinks. Not before work. Not at work. Has a good job and had received promotion after promotion after promotion. It literally has had no adverse affect on her personal or professional life. No health issues. At least not yet. But honestly she's in her 60s now... So any damage has already been done. Is she an alcoholic by definition? I think so. Is it a problem? Not at all. Its like my grandma who's in her 90s and has been smoking cigs since she was 13. She's all good. Healthiest 90 year old iv ever met. Is smoking bad? Yeah. She's been smoking her entire life though and is all good.

It really comes down to the individual. Some people have the genes, will power, or maybe just luck. And again im not saying this to bubs. If he has a problem he should kick it. Just sagging not everyone responds the same way to these types of things

different things work for different people at different ages. If your drinking like a 21 year old when your 45 and raising two kids its not appropriate.

My point here is its important to wrestle your beasts and learn your limits, or you can just swear off the **** all together and have a relapse falling off the wagon as soon as you have a drink in 5 years.

Both parents and grandparents are alcoholics, im one as well and so are many many friends. Many have led functioning lives. If drinking makes you happy and doesnt ruin your life I say do it, if you can't enjoy it in moderation without destroying your life then dont.
I was simply putting in my 2 cents and opinions.

Cancer is a disease, you cant choose to get cancer. You can participate in things that make you prone to cancer. But no matter what you didn't pick up a drink to start having cancer. You just got it because of a combination of factors and variables that led to it, or through genetic history.

Sure you can be genetically inclined to alcoholism, but without that first drink your not an alcoholic and having that first drink, and the next one, (and arguably every one from thence forth) is a choice you make. No one forces your hand but you.

Without alcohol there is no alcoholism. Its your choice to take that first drink ever in your life, so by that logic i don't consider it a disease.

If you believe you are powerless you will be. If you believe you have the power to quit then you can. It wont be easy and many cant but YOU are ultimately responsible for your own life noone else. So Bubs if drinking is f u cking up your life then STOP. If you can get a handle on it then enjoy in moderation. If walking the line gets too complicated then make a decision what matters most to you.

i know ill catch alot of flak for it but im sticking to my guns.

I choose to be an alcoholic because i like drinking everyday and genuinely enjoy being an alcoholic.

yes its bad for me, yes it may destroy my life, and yes i waste alot of time doing it and yes it one day may kill me but i could say the same things about my job fighting fire.

i started drinking when i was in 6th grade, started doing other substances in 8th (all of which i have since quit) and smoked a pack a day from 12 years old until i was 19 then woke up one day and didnt want to smoke any more and quit cold turkey. None of this applies to others but its what worked for me.

If i had motivation to choose not to be an alcoholic i would, It wouldn't be easy but I have faith I could. Im sure someone will bring up that im in denial but Im freely admitting im an alcoholic and I enjoy it for now, well see what happens when i get real responsibility one day. but hopefully i never will and ill die alone. Thats my 2 cents and opinion, everyone proceed to rip my head off now if they want to.

    im going surfing

true i shouldnt turn this about me when a fellow swellie opens up to us about our problems. we have a saying in fire "throw someone a rope not a rock"

but idk this threads kinda got the vibe where we can talk about our problems and open up, and i thought id share with bubs how hes not alone and that i am also an excessive substance abuser with a different perspective.
