Any advice on beaches that have smaller clean waves when the other beaches are too big? I'm planning on heading to Wrightsville and the forecast on Saturday looks like it could be very big and a bit windy. I noticed it looked cleaner and smaller at Holden beach. It looks a bit more protected based on the maps but I thought I'd asked. I'm happy with 3 to 6 ft range as long as it is clean and the period is long.

I've been watching the weather channel and it looks like a house or two could be taken down. Anyone have some first hand reports on storm surge damage? The OBX and VA beach look like a mess.

any south facing beaches like Holden or Emerald Isle will be clean with wind blowing from really any Northerly direction.

My advice is: don't come. You won't like it at WB with this kind of swell. Go somewhere else. Tell all your friends. Go to Holden...that place will be going off.

don't listen to loaf...wb will be head high MAX, but should be clean. Trust me if you go to holden you will be dissapointed, maybe check out the north end (of wb) if you're worried about crowds.

    Thanks for the feedback

and don't worry loafer I won't be arriving with hoards of surfers looking to steal your waves. I'm solo and I tend to shy away from crowded breaks. I learned about a secret beach you paddle to (shhh) that I've been told has clean breaks when there are strong northern winds.

The conditions looked surprisingly clean today on the cam given the high winds. I've been watching weather pornography today and watched parts of Nags Head.beach houses wash into the sea. The waves were enormous but way to blown out to surf.

it was hard to keep it a secret when I was surfing it in the 80s. i definately wasnt the first and neither were the guys who showed it to me . remember my first time like it was yesterday....ahhhh....nobody out there but me and a couple friends. dodging charter boats, huge sharks and trying not to get sucked out to sea. the waves were epic tho. is there anywhere thats a secret anymore??? cant erase it from google earth. the good thing is that most kooks would be too lazy or scared to try it so.....oh yeah, i heard a scary monster lives there so be afraid

So there is a secret spot!

And I was just joking. Notice how I didn't say where the place was, just that you had to paddle to it (which is the case for most secret spots in populated places) and that it is protected from northern winds (which is what you would need given the wind patterns over the next few days). You don't have to give me the name, someone has already sent me an angry message to keep my mouth shut and in so doing told me exactly where it is. Now I just have to look on a map.

By the way, I do surfing tours for a living. So if you see a guy arriving with 30 other surfers, that will be me. But don't worry, I won't let anyone else know.

when you talk like a d-bag, you get talked to like a d-bag. if you knew your way around the breaks so well, why are you trolling this site with your stupid posts.

i am sure you had a great session with all your buddies from Raleigh. and, you didn't steal any of my waves. i share them freely and enjoy the ones i get - they are not ours to steal (Job 9:8)...this is the part of surfing that is lost on you children.

i enjoyed "it" in the '80's too, cricha. it doesn't make us kooks - it just means we have more respect for the land and more appreciation for the "stoke."

Heard that! I'm just as stoked for a grom taking off on his first good wave as I am when i snag one myself. problem is theres so many young guys with this attitude ....ya know its funny tho cuz they ONLY spit their sh*t here. They sure as hell dont say anything when in the water. Hmmmm, why do you think that is? I know my kids will have a foot in the arse if i catch them being rude to folks for no good reason!!!

If your the kooks who brought all the kooks to mercers never come back. i got cut off by like 20 different guys and had to bottom turn around people who could barely duckdive. if that was you, never come back.
