$10k is quite the budget u can literally go anywhere and probably do 2 different continents.

if I was rich id go to Tahiti, lots of other waves besides chopes

I don't know you at all except you are an Oregon forest firefighter and seem to be a competent surfer.

Given what you've posted, I'd have to agree with Indo. My first instinct was Hawaii. But you know, you can do Hawaii anytime, even with a family. Indo is a harder trip to do if you ever settle down. So Indo gets my vote.

My grail trip, which it is starting to look like will never happen, is Tavarua. Seriously, I keep picking milestones to do that trip, and they keep passing without me going. While it will eat a big portion of your travel fund, I can only say from my experience that it only gets harder the longer you put it off.

So...full-on Fiji, or else Indo would be my call. I don't know Indo enough to know what to expect in your travel timeframe but still...I'll bet it would be an awesome trip regardless.

I would be looking for areas that are at their best during Jan/Feb. Aren't those Indo spots better during our summer months? I'd hate to travel halfway around the world just to get skunked for 2 months.

What about Chile? More waves than Peru, less crowded and way more infrastructure. About as First World as you can get in South America.

You know, South Africa might be a good call. Super cheap, and a lot to see down there when the surf is flat.

yeah dude chile could be solid. indos on my list but id rather go in the summer after a fire season in oz and spend at least a year there then half as s it this year get a few typhoon swells and dengue fever cause its rainy season. northern hemi or equator is the place to be in nov- march but well see

either way ill head to indo in the next three years but i still gotta get my type one firefighter quals to be marketable in a leadership position internationally so that means not pulling the plug on the states for another season. maybe ill do an offseason tactical trip this year but i just think theres better options during that time of year globally for wave quality and quantity

    dat millimeter peter.

last day on fire assignment, been sober for over twenty days getting drunk as fuc k, drunk as fuc k, with the crew tommorrow night and surfing on my two r and r days. i get paid days off so ill technically be a sponsered surfer from uncle sam.

today we mop up a bomb testing range fire. time to find some unexploded ordinance!

Hawaii. seriously, so much surf, more than many other spots
live with the brazzos on the cheap, surf the yard daily and get a 10'0 and take the ski out with those guys to Phantoms when its time.

one winter in Hawaii is worth 5-10 winters anywhere else, it will push you more than any other surf destination.
you wont have the adventure aspect of travel when compared to Latin American adventures you described but you will just be surfing so much it wont matter

you owe yourself at least one full on North Shore winter. it will change your life, you will meet people that you will see a half decade later half away around the world.

Hawaii is the Hero's journey bro, Listen to Joseph Campbell, make the Hero's Journey

my second pick would be Portugal with extensive time in the Azores.

If you had summer off I would say Indo

I'm telling you, if you want to catch some bombs, North Korea is where it's at.

Wrecks is spot on, you can't go wrong with a North Shore winter and 10,000 buh could last you for a winter. I thought about Portugal too but IIRC they have their best waves during Fall?

So if you're gonna do the Indo thing then that means you gotta stop blowing off training opportunities and other career-advancing man killing sh!t and go legit. I know you're prepping to go off the grid and sh!t but sometimes you gotta fling some poo poo to achieve your vision, knee grow.

I still think Chile sounds kewl though

I don't disagree about the North Shore being a totally epic winter surf experience.

My perspective is more about thinking long term. Hawaii is a very easy surf trip to do once you can afford it. So, let's say in a few years Trev finds himself with a wife and two kids...it can happen...and he wants to do a surf trip and the wife wants to come along. Hawaii is a super easy sell and there's plenty for wife and kids to do. You can stay at Turtle Beach and leave her sipping Mai Tai's while you're getting pitted off your butt at Sunset.

Indo is much harder. That's all I'm saying. So do the hard trips now, while you can, and save the easy trip like Hawaii for when life gets more complicated.

trevor and you are in wildly different stations of life at this moment and I think you forgot about seasons

all good, but doing Hawaii for months on end with children is out of the question unless you live there

spending 6 months on the north shore and surfing 300 times in one season is not possible with kids

Fair enough. I have no idea what Trev's or anyone's long term plans are.

I suppose if we're talking a no-kidding November-May surf trip, then that assumes either no kids or homeschooling. I'm sure neither of those are even a consideration in the immediate future.

I still maintain that Hawaii is an easy trip, especially from Oregon, compared to Indo or Africa. But, no doubt Hawaii will provide the goods waves-wise.
