This actually getting funny. That there are grown men telling other grown men and Betty what they can or cannot say because they don't want other grown men to get offended. They funniest thing is that they actually think they are "working", that moderating a forum is work. Hilarious.
It's the random enforcement that's annoying. "Offensive comments" are made every day, on every thread, nearly every other post. What really happens is someone gets "offended" and reports it, then they crack down, people revolt and it turns into another mod take over, which I thought they learned their lesson on doing this the last time. The only thing that should be policed at this point should be any threats of violence. Those have legal implications should they go through with it, so I get the enforcement on that, but using locker room talk or foul language is covered under the freedom of speech. Yes it's their forum, and yes it's their rules, but there is no forum if not for us foul mouthed surfers. I don't come here for the forecast anymore, it's rarely accurate and almost irrevevant (use to be fairly accurate) No, I come here to talk sh*t with my bouys.
I do agree that it is getting ridiculous and some of what's considered offensive is obsurd. BUT I think the whole Freedom of Speech thing gets thrown around on here too often... It does not apply to a privately owned forum. People have the right to say what they want in public, but they don't have the right to stand on your porch and yell through your window
Freedom of speech means you're not going to be thrown in jail for expressing your thoughts. Like NYNJ says, it doesn't provide you any protection from getting banned or infarqeded for being a moron.
To me, the whole infraction, rules, etc, means my time here is rapidly approaching the end. As DSUP state, I come here for fun; forecasts are useless through no fault of SI personnel. But once it ceases to be fun, why bother. SI can then have a forum of those wishing to advertise their products and not paying for it. That will end the forum, and, as it has other sites, follow with the end of the actual site. Too bad--I believe we all made a few friends here; even if we are a bunch of morons.....
