Along the lines of what Lance suggested, I spotted this one a few years back:

Yeah man I'm with Barry. Just get a vehicle that fits the budget. Make it work. People make all diffrent kinds of vehicles work for there needs. It really doesn't matter.

Thanks to o barry for towing the line here.

Go with the buick, the extra float will help.

If you have the money go with a tacoma or four runner. Isuzu Rodeo with the V6 is a good choice too.

For a first car I always recommend a Toyota. Just keep gas and clean oil in it and it will not leave you stranded. If you buy American* or German, remember this post when you are dropping $$$ at the mechanic.

*I love American goods but our auto industry build quality is close to last in the world.

Japanese cars drive like **** ($hit), you're better off getting an older German car. Make sure it was well maintained and learn to maintain it yourself. Newer American cars also drive significantly better than their Japanese counterparts. Plus they are just as reliable given that you take care of it.

To original poster, you sound like you're spoiled. You probably have options. Get a volkswagen golf alltrack manual.

saw a Fiat the other day with the board coming out of the side of the car (3-4 ft to the right) and out of the back window (about 5 ft out). if only i had a camera. so in other words, don't buy a small car like a Miata. you'll look like an idiot, that's a guarantee

I hear windowless white vans are all the rage these days. A bible, some duct tape, candy, and a free surfboards sign and you're all set.

Yeah this is exactly why I suggested the SUV.

My first surf vehicle was a 1974 Ford Courier. It carried everything I needed in the bed, but it couldn't be secured without a shell.

My 2nd surf vehicle was a '64 VW Bus. There's a reason why so many surfers drive vans.

Seriously man, go buy yourself an old beat-up Harley that doesn't run. Get some tools and read the manual. Watch you tube videos and wrench on that sucker until you get it running.
Then head out on that endless highway, fall in with a pack of 1%ers, commit nefarious felonies, get that 3 piece patch and don't look back. And the woman, by golly let me tell you I have some stories lad.
Sounds better than heading to the beach in a beat up station wagon with your geeky friend whose face is covered in acne trying to score knee high slop with 500 other turds right?

Get a body beat Volvo XC 70. You can find them, cheap..... You can easily get 250-300k miles if you only change the oil every 3-5k miles. I can fit my 11'2'' O'Hare in and lock it. Own a Volvo, crash a Vulva!
