at 16 i would say a woods boat . And there are varieties to shop from . Anything made in the 80's . Has to have a v8 or 6 . Grandma and Grandpa owned it prior to 4 other owners . Monte ,88 olds delta , caprice , etc . Those things are like tanks , great for boating around in the woods . Awesome for donuts , drifting turns , power braking . I would go buy one just to take it down some dirt roads and drive like you stole it . Best damn woods boat ever made where during those years . plus those trunks can fit like 5 dead bodies in there , roomie and spacious .

Idk you must have some budget!

My first car was an old hand me down Buick

If your parents are getting you something, then that's great and all just get something that you can easily put a board ontop and also inside so it doesn't get stolen when at school etc

If you gotta buy something yourself, I would suggest an old pickup with a cap or a tonneau cover. Some trucks come with a lockable back gate so you can lock it all. I like this option the best, no one can see what you got and you don't have to worry about your wax melting all over your car interior or your board getting ruined by heat. It doesn't seem to get as hot in the back since there's no windows. Plus your stinky wetsuit will die better back there... and it's also just easier then using roof racks ...

Anyways- hope you make a wise choice and stay in school kid!

I remember when they were all over the road back in the 70's! I never had a Pinto, but my mom had one and those things were ugly as fock! Same with Chevette's! I was embarrassed to be seen in the Pinto and be dropped off at school in it!
I laughed at this one! I almost unloaded my bladder at the 5 dead bodies part!
LOL! Think that one caused my bladder to spring a leak!

You only need to ask yourself one question when deciding on a vehicle, what would NJShredmachine do? If you look at the car and it is not the fastest on the block, the answer is no. If you cannot bang hindus in the car, the answer is no. If Vin Diesel does not drive that car, the answer is no.

The answer is Nissan baby. GT. Needless I say more?

This is a joke, right? How exactly do you "make sure" it was maintained? Don't say service records because 99.9% of used cars do not have any written record, and even if they do they're probably falsified. Also, do you really think this kid has the means ($$$) and discipline to maintain one? But what do I know, just been in the auto repair/sales/finance biz for 30 years.

Lesson: All German cars are garbage. American cars built after 1990 are cheap garbage. Only buy either if you have the means to purchase new with bumper to bumper warranty. If you are on a budget buy a Honda or a Toyota.

Way back in 1987 I paid more for my first boarte than my first car. But it was a 6'4" Rusty hand shaped by the man himself ($425.00 1987 dorrars), and the car was a P.O.S. Datsun I bought for tree fitty.
The car engine seized a year later cuz I forgot to change the oil.
The Rusty retired in Costa Rica in 1997. (Swapped it for a pair of board shorts and a cab ride from Jaco to Dominical).

I stand by my comment that Japanese cars are trash. I just do not like how they feel and their styling. Their headlights are too slanted, hard to see at night.

Finding a car that was well maintained requires some intuition. Think Europeans and old people compared to Mexicans and 18-25 age group.

Also that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you (change the oil and filters). Learn to drive manual transmission, they're less expensive and have less moving parts that can break.

Some good recs here. My wife and I have two toyota trucks, a sienna minivan and a dual sport. Without a doubt if we had to go one vehicle we would keep the sienna (man card takes a hit). Why? Tons of room, very reliable, super easy to ditch the seats and make a bed in the back, already has roof racks, great gas mileage, completely under the radar and you can fit tons of boards and even longboards inside. Drove the sienna through Mex twice and wouldn't do it any other way. If you get the minivan you have a surfvehicle/ camper ready to go with 60$ of lumber and a mattress! You can find them with 125,000ish miles for 3-4 grand. Good luck!
