They were still "great" men, win or lose--they represented the South in all the glory that they could muster up, not just for themselves, but for the people they stood for.
Preserving the monuments built to these men, is a responsibility of following generations. There are lessons to be learned from them, win or lose.
Again, it is PC gone wild. Nothing more. And it is a faction of your society trying to make YOU pay for the evils of past generations, when in fact, YOU had nothing to do with it. These factions are trying to profit from your enforced sense of collective guilt.

It's a tough issue, hard to say what is right and what is wrong. My family, we were not slaves since we are not black. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I've been told.

Maybe they should build a huge confederate monument park in D.C. or Montgomery, AL and move all the monuments there so people could come see and become more edumicated.

such a well thought out and reasoned response. when you realize you can't justify your position just start with the name calling. got it.

They were NOT "great" people--you misunderstand the concept of monuments.
But the lesson to learn from McVeigh : WE KILLED HIM. Period.

    we have museums for that.

to be honest, i don't really care either way about these statues. to me it is a local issue. if a town or university wants to put up or tear down a monument to slavery, bigotry and hatred it's not my business unless i live in that town.

but there are reasons there are no statues of hitler in germany. though some on this forum probably think there should be.

And they are presently experiencing the rise of neo-nazi groups!! Big time.
    Thanks for reinforcing my point.

My Father-In Law came from Honduras, he's a black / Spanish immigrant who came to this country and joined our military and had a long 20-25 years as a drill instructor. Even he doesn't want to see the monuments taken down. He understands. He served this Country and is a proud American. He had nothing in Honduras. If it wasn't for the slave holders of the past who founded this Country, he would never have had the life he has been so fortunate to have. He says he'd probably be dead if hadn't gotten out of Honduras. SO he's very thankful for the USA despite the flaws of our founding fathers.

No need to move all the monuments. Keep them where they are. Your suggestion is basically saying the people of Montgomery AL are all racist and are the only ones who can appreciate the monuments. That's just silly.

I have endless well thought out points I can make against you, but your constant crying and complaining doesn't deserve such a response. Your cry baby attitude gets no sympathy from me. You and people like you are what's wrong with this country today. You keep digging up the past and reigniting fights we've already fought as a Country. Get over it and move on. Our Country will be better for it.

not sure what things you think i am digging up and reigniting. we are discussing current events.

as for "fights we've already fought as a Country", the civil war was fought 150 years ago. the south lost. as you said, "Get over it and move on. Our Country will be better for it."

Good Lord you are thick skulled and a moron. You clearly have stated you are in favor of these monuments being taken down. The whole thing is people digging up the past and trying to erase it. You are cool with that, I am not. Get it?

You using my quote against me is moronic. You don't get it. By condoning this behavior to destroy monuments and trying to erase history you are part of the problem. My suggesting you and others like you get over it and move on is exactly what you need to do. I didn't dig up the past, the alt-left is, and you clearly are a part of that. Capice?

I don't care about the statues, in all honesty. There is plenty of real bigotry to be pissed about. A statue is not going to prevent you from getting a job or lynch you from a nearby tree. That said, to view them as purely historical relics is a little simplistic. Lee and Stonewall Jackson statues were not erected before or during the Civil War. They were erected, mostly in the first half of the 20th Century, in rebuke civil rights... in other words "oh yea, you're gonna tell me I have to allow blacks a vote? Well, I'm gonna put up a statue of Robert E Lee in front of the Courthouse, so when black folks come to vote, they will be reminded of whose really boss."

And Barry, since your overarching point is "if we forget the past, we are doomed to repeat it", isn't that in direct contradiction to your other point that we should not talk about racism? If racism is truly in the past, if we don't talk about it and forget it, aren't we doomed to repeat?

You can try to put words in my mouth but that will not work.
So, Absolutely not. Racism had died down to a menial ember until the former idiot president you supported reignited it with malice aforethought. Apparently, you have swallowed hook, line and sinker.

Having said that, learning about racism and fighting about it are two different things. Continuos arguments about it are useless; so is fighting about it. I never said we shouldn't "talk" about it.

That's a dumb comparison. McVeigh was a nobody who is known for the bombing of innocent people. These men were leaders of our Country.

I call it the 7-11 test: You can walk into a convenience store, gas station, Piggly Wiggly, Wa Wa anywhere in the country. I can guage the racial atmosphere in that particular geo zone by simply standing in line, waiting to pay, and walking in and out of the store. Things have been real chill in my little neck of the woods, thankfully. A bit more tense lately, but not bad like it used to be in the 70s and early 80s. And in Montgomery.
