Don't listen to that article. For me, when I moved out at 18, I wanted my space and I got it. But after a while I wanted to hear from my parents a little more than I did. They were always big on giving me space and letting me be independent, which helped mold me into a very self sufficient person, but I feel they could stay in contact a little more than they did. They pretty much wait for me to call which annoys me. If it goes on for too long then I hear from them and they're asking me if everything is alright lol.... Everything's fine! Just don't wait till it's holidays or B Days to say hello every now and then or don't wait till something major happens or bad news to reach out. Texting is good, but pick up the phone every now and then. Don't worry about him being "too busy", he'll call back if he is anyways, don't take it personal is all. just my .02
I second what DP said. My parents never hounded me or anything. Even when i lived with them up to when i moved out, they were more like "the people that live downstairs" than parents. Which was cool and all. Then i moved out. Pops would come by for a beer and to watch a football game or somthing. If he was out riding his motorcycle he'd stop by. Mom would come by every few weeks to go out to eat. I moved a town over but right smack in the middle of this happening town with great restaurants. She wanted to try them all. Now they don't come by anymore. Don't call. I see them when i go home to do laundry. I could go to a laundromat a 2 min walk from where i live. But going home gives me a chance to see them and catch up every week. They always ask why they don't see me anymore. BECAUSE YOU DON'T CALL! Swing by whenever. We can go out to eat whenever. Then when i call them they talk my ear off like they hadn't heard muy voice in years. All they gotta do is call more often. Definitely call him zip. Texts here and there for those memes you mentioned or whatever. But call at least once a week just to shoot the poo
That make no sense to me either. Where did you read this article? My daughter loves when I text her pictures and videos of our dogs.
...WHAT! My pops paid me $8/hr, under the table, and still took taxes out to teach me life lesson. You hiring?!?! lol
lol, well he only worked 10 hours all summer. I told him he was on call If I needed him so in theory he was on standby the whole time. Turned out I only really needed him those 10 hours then we surfed the other days. My business is about a densely packed 2 to 3 hours of work every few days. Then sitting and waiting for service issues. On a busy day I might only need him 1 out of 4 hours. It was really for me that I did this and to give him one last summer before college to be free. He did have a great summer of beach fires, surfing and hanging with friends. It was worth it to see him so relaxed. In years past he was working 6-7 days a week and was truly worn out by the time school started.
I can be a real jerk sometimes, not sure you would like me as a dad. I do have a soft spot for my son, family and friends. I wonder what his perception of me will be? That's gonna be interesting to hear someday, lol.
Our four 20-something year-olds respond much more quickly and frequently to texts than to phone calls or phone messages.
