It's the back side of the eye wall that is the worst. The thing ramps up, trashes a bunch of stuff and loosens up a bunch more stuff. Then it gets calm, then it hits again with a vengeance from the opposite direction, and anything loosend up or downed on the first run gets airborne. In other words all the stuff gets dragged down the street in one direction, then it gets blown back in the other direction real fast.
Northeast isn't always spared though. Hurricane of 1938 was a category 5 that made landfall in New England, my grandparents home got completely flattened and then washed away. At the time it held the record for US sustained wind speed. They rebuilt the house and in 54 it got washed away again in hurricane carol. Hurricane irene destroyed countless bridges and roads in Vermont, the summit lodge at Killington ski resort actually slide of its foundation and down the mountain. Though we aren't as likely to be at risk, the whole east coast needs to watch out for hurricanes.
South Beach is mandatory evacuation now? Going to be a lot of salvage title Ferraris on the market in a few months...
Storm surge forecast down there is alarming. Good luck - maybe you can nail all your wooden boards together into an ark?
My family has had a place in the Keys since the 40s. Georges nearly did it in (Category 4 I think) so I can't imagine the damage a 5 would do. Our place is RIGHT on the Atlantic, so I'm not feeling good at all. The place is all closed up, but it's a hope and a prayer at this point. Anyone who's been there knows there's literally nowhere to hide on the islands. The Gulf and Atlantic would most likely meet and absolutely swamp everything.
Airport in Orlando and Atlanta were insanely busy today. All evacuating from florida. There were some, though, hopping planes to Miami...WTF? Will watch from Atlanta, then go home when order is restored and pick up the pieces. Figure it will be like Jeanne in 04. Sadly, Miami looks tougher. The boards are locked up tight. Priorities, man!
"Quick summary (I don't have much time this afternoon) 12Z GFS slightly west, just offshore, closest to WPB (20-30 miles) midday Sunday. Landfall midday Monday near Savannah, GA. 12Z Euro shifts west, over Marathon Key as Cat 5. Then landfall southwest Florida Sunday morning, then up through the spine, over or just west of Orlando near Lake City, FL Midday Monday. Extremely devastating run."---flhurricane.com
I'm waiting a couple days to figure out, maybe go to a friend's more inland. I might stick till Sunday and help the homeowner board up the beach house and put everything on blocks cuz my place is gonna flood. Know another guy who lives on the 3rd floor of his spot on folly, so gotta see where it goes and the cat#
