    Howdy swinfoers,

Wife and I have some fam we have been meaning to visit in the Wilmington area and have the weekend off. Thinking about popping up for the swell. Would rather not surf with 8 million people so drop some knowledge on me. Definitely not looking to surf wrightsville with the crowd....what about Holden, Emerald Isle, Carolina beach, etc.....can any of them handle long period swell and which ones aren't zooed out? Possible to find an empty barreling peak round these parts or should we just go straight to Belmar with my springsuite??? Any info appreciated as I haven't surfed the area in years. Ain''t looking for secret spots just the general 411...PM if you don't want to share publicly. Cheers enjoy the swell

let me present to you the following points.

1.WB will be packed and/also the sand bars are shot after these last few storms. parking will be hard to find. you will have to pay.

    2. masonboro will be a zoo. so lol.

    3. CB will be ok. go north.

    4. topsail or surf city is probably your best bet. clicky click click

Thanks for the info gents....topsail actually looks pretty sick for a log....I like a good noseride but looking for some shortboard action when the swell's pumping. Anyone else got any infos?

Also, tried to PM you Me tard but for some reason it says "can't find user" ) :

Everywhere around here breaks the same +/- 5%. Northern ends of the islands tend to hold longer period swell better. Inlets are your friend.

I will tell you this: if the 'cane is hooking in toward the coast on it's approach, you'll want to find a south facing beach.

I'll be in the Wilmington area Friday morning for a session. Was thinkin Topsail. not planning on bringing a LB but a couple shortys and a couple funboards. I'm still bareing it on Folly, i gotta see if ppl in WIlmington, OBX are doing wetsuits or not. Would think it's still at worst rashguard weather

2 Mil top in the AM. You'll be ok with a rash guard noon and after. CB breaks relatively fast. Like tard said, head to the North End.

If you're looking to beat the crowds Topsail or Holden are your best bets. Holden or Oak Island will be dicey depending on how far west the storm comes. There are some shoals that block a lot of swell. As for water temp I've been fine with just a t shirt.

Ft macon was goin off ,AB , EI, it was all good but long period swell is a ***** on a beachbreak ,it helps to have a feature like an inlet, jetty or shipwreck even , so be prepared for dumping shorebreak and real long walls .it wouldnt hurt to bring a vest its nice now but offshores are from the north so it can get cool in am plus it helps the ribs if your going to be surfing a lot over several days.i did see a few springsuits but lot of folks wear them as anti jellyfish suits .

I'm likely heading to the AB/EI area friday morning - it's pretty easy to get away from crowds down there. The long period is gonna be iffy on saturday though; did a strike mission to surf city week before last and was in the water right when the irma long period swell started to show up and the beachbreak just can't handle it down there. Macking, sheet glass closeouts that looked awesome when you got out, but was basically just punishment in the water. It's definitely worth looking there though.

Also, I always felt like holden held long period swells way better than wrightsville but i haven't honestly surfed down there in a couple years. Seems like the rule of thumb is just to stay away from wrightsville though haha.
