Holden Beach can hold a long period swell, But the tide needs to be lower. There's a couple of spots that work really well down there, and typically its not crowded (I say typically because I've seen it PACKED there.) But be carful of the swell direction, if its coming out of the east too much then you'll arrive to long, glassy... thigh high sets.. Meanwhile it'll be 1 to 3 overhead just around the cape. My suggestion would be to check out the eastern side of the island during a low tide IF the swell direction is more southerly and IF the wind is blowing offshore.
Cheers gents....lots of good info here ..appreciate the knowledge. Hope everyone gets it good this weekend!
The long period isn't that big of a deal as long as the tides and winds are proper. I've been surfing Surf City and Atlantic Beach on the past few hurricane swells and scored big time. Even on the biggest days just wait for the tide to push in a bit and go wherever the wind is right. It's never really an issue if you just follow those two rules. And look around a bit, you'll find what you're looking for.
Yeah I don't disagree with any of that. I got down there the other week and basically had to get in when I could - no time to search. Tide was going back out, and the 16/18sec swell started to show up and the sets were just punishing haha. The moral of the story for this weekend though, is that if you look around a bit, you're likely to score.
CB = stabbed to death by meth heads TI = stabbed to death by marines EI = stabbed to death by everyone Your only safe bet is WB. Park at metards house.
Well yu have to work the curve of onslow bay,the north end gets really tore up when souths slam into it but if theres too much east in swell it goes by the beach and hits better further south like surf city and Wrghtsville and south so consider the direction beach faces and swell and wind direction.north winds work best up in AB and EI but as you go south it might be sideshore winds so just have to see what happens and hit it
was out at North Topsail yesterday evening. Long period swell, 10 ft faces. lotta closeouts. OBX was all blown out on Sunday, supposedly, south OBX still may have had some rideable surf. We tried our luck on Topsail, it was bigly and pretty windy. No one else out but another buddy of mine. i got one left in that was a brief ride and three monsters rolled up to make sure i didn't get back out there. was on the road, so i didn't mind the short sess
Ended up sticking around and surfing a wave that never breaks that was fun. Sounds like ya'll scored. Thanks for the info cheers
actually, never made it that far....surfed Oak Island yesterday morning and again this afternoon. had more punch yesterday, seems like it was fading late this afternoon. good fun nonetheless
