no kidding...a great American song writer, RIP. and somewhere there's a quote where he said," if you think writing a hit song is easy, let's see you do it"...or something to that effect. RIP, indeed.
Damn. Goodbye Tom Petty.
lol they are.just seen it.3 hrs ago they said they took him off life support, now there saying hes still on life support. hopefully he pulls through
with as big a chain smoker as he was, I'm surprised Petty made it nearly this far. He was definitely a hook-laden badass in the late 70/early 80s...but I truly despise his "free fallin" era music. RIP
When I was young I thought he was Richard Petty's brother, and that they were the most talented family on Earth. At least he died doing what he loved?
Did he still smoke up to his death? I remember back in the early 00's, my roommate at the time used to love watching VH1 and would watch those behind the music specials and other documentary type stuff on there. I remember when they were interviewing Tom Petty during these things, he had a cigarette going almost every time he was interviewed. If he wasn't shown smoking it, you could see the smoke rising up from beneath the screen. We both were like ''How long was he there for? He couldn't go an hour without a cigarette?''. I swear, the only other guys that smoked during those things were Keith Richards and Slash, who were notorious for always being seen with cigarettes. I remember seeing Slash say that he quit a few years back, but Keith is probably mid-70's and has said that cigarettes are the only thing he hasn't quit. I also can't stand his Free Fallin era. He had some good stuff in the late 70's and maybe the very early 80's. I do like the song Learnin To Fly, but only for sentimental reasons. It's not a song that I'd rock out to and blast in the car or blast anywhere. At the time it came out, I was in love with a girl, she broke my heart, it may have been the only time I was clinically depressed. Then I met a girl a month or two later, who I wound up being with for over 5 years. That was back in the Summer of 91 when that came out, I was only 20. The song just reminds me of a transitional point in my life, with some bad memories and good ones.
Going to U of F (Gainesville FL) in 1977 he was already legend. Gritty guitar and vocals, a no prisoners approach to life, and a talent for awesome lyrics. I missed his last tour, always figured he'd be back in a few months with another new rock and roll hit song fresh out of the studio. "American Girl" and "Won't Back Down" and "Last Dance With Mary Jane" are my favorites that come to mind.
This was one of the anthems of my wasted youth
I forgot how good he was back in the day. And he kicked ass until he died.
