VB is a blackhole of surf 2nd to only Tybee Island: Name 1 positive about your break

Pro: Five quality breaks within a short bike ride of home.
Con: All five are insanely crowded most of the time.

 

i understand VB cuz i've heard ppl go out surfing there. i wouldn't include Tybee. Been there more than a handful of times, and no one mentions surfing out there tho i know a couple ppl that have. not sure they're braggin about it, and plus there are like 10 other spots outside of Tybee btwn Fernandina, FL and Hunting Island, SC that are far worse. i don't think you'll spot a short board at Tybee in other words

 

We used to have a kid that posted here from Tybee from time to time. I thought it was interesting, I'm always curious about places like that.

I like to hear about places like Tybee and St. Simons and waves in Alabama and Louisiana and especially Texas. I think it's cool when the rare days come together and go off at places that just don't happen very often.

I find looking at pictures of rare waves more entertaining than seeing pix of perfect Pipe or pretty much any other name spots. I guess that's why I really enjoyed that recent piece on Shackleford.

Somebody needs to post more pics of that left point under the bridge by VA.

 

1:"Beach replenishment" is starting to work in favor of surfboard riders in some areas and summer is gone along with the floating muerto.

Va Beachers roll up to any spot, like some random sandbar (not talking the lighthouse or Jennette's Pier) and the first thing they do is pull out their phone and call all their boys. They look for local cars.

 

So do locals in NC... I remember Noah Snyder laughing about how people would see his truck parked and just assume that it was best where he was at. I really need to step up my game and start blowing up every spot i see when I'm down south. Wouldn't want you to think that some people don't do that

 

Pro: great breaks
Con: no waves (eff you Cape Cod!)

 

Always seemed funny to me that there's a much bigger surf shop on the south shore vs up on Cape Ann given the wave distribution.

 

Pros: My break is not in VB
Cons: We dont have waffle house up here, and nobody really wears thongs. I mean, once in a while you see one, but its not like college chicks with those new T thongs that are really just pieces of string. If I'm doing a poor job of describing them just click the SCW thread.

 

Pros: My local break is a beach break only 15-20 minutes from home, very consistent due to swell exposure from the North, East, and South and being outside of the Cape Shadow and outside of the Bahama Shadow. Parking is free. Empty peaks year round. Majority of my sessions I'm the only one in the water as far as I can see. Breaks on most tides, including high tide pretty often. Showers and bathrooms on site. Holds large swell and picks up the smallest of swells when others are flat. Oh yeah, I can trunk it most of the year, just a few short months of wearing a spring suite or 3/2.

Cons: Not many. Only a few days per year does it get "crowded". Sand bars are beat up from storms but are improving. Its kinds sharky. If wind is too strong from North or South, I have to drive 30-45 minutes to get some wind protection at the Pier or Inlet jetty. No reef or point at my regular spot, but there's coquina rock reef at a couple spots not far from it, actually same distance from home but North instead of South. Variety of setups is a little lacking around here. Just miles and miles of empty beach break. Jetty and Pier always crowded and makes driving there dreadful.

Funny all the anti VB posts. Same **** was said 25 years ago by people from OBX, but it was way worse back then. They actually had reason. When I go down south these days I'm surprised by how few people are actually out surfing, locals or otherwise. Just saying if you think your break is invaded these day, it ain't got nothing on back then, and nobody had cell phones either. Do you ever see cars at Ferry signs, Boilers, S turns, Ramp 21, Ramp 34? Does the Rodanthe pier ever get crowded, both sides like it use to? No it doesn't. Frisco from the pier to the bathhouse used to get crowded. Now you'd be lucky to find someone to surf with there aside from maybe the North side of it in the summer.

 

Rockapulco usually has an easy paddle out.
I've even walked most of the way to the lineup before even getting on my boarte to paddle the remaining few yards.

 

Uh...ya don't see people at those spots because they are no longer spots. Great name dropping though. All I am saying is, we got our own secluded sand bar here and there, and you idiots roll up and crash the spot with like 10 guys (I can't imagine wanting to surf with more than one other person, 90% of the time I go alone - just got in from a solo sesh earlier). Then they get out the cellphones and call more in. I'll save you guys some trouble, I may get death threats for this, but the new S-Turns is in Carova. If you don't have 4WD, you are outta luck. Maria and Jose have moved a lot of sand around, turning this place on its head. Beach nourishment has hurt the surf for now.
