Where to go in South Pacific?

Based on surf sites alone (I have never been there), I would say Thailand and Indonesia.
I would steer clear of the Philippines (for security reasons, especially if wife goes along).
Just opinion

The Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia are all potential destinations. -----I have traveled to all of these places.

Thailand is like the Costa Rica of Asia but w/o much surf
Cambodia is very much 3rd world and there is lots of adventure to be had ....angkor wat is amazing

Vietnam has some amazing beaches and culture not as remote as Cambodia by any means

If you wanna surf Philippines and of course Indo are the only destinations. The surf in Bali is crowded as fock but the wife will love it and the beach, paddle out, and overall vibe at uluwatu is something to behold....there are so many spots in Indo that there's is no way to cover it all but you can go from lap of lux to feral camping depending on what your after

Philippines is the wildcard. There are some really amazing spots there....people, food and culture are awesome.....one of my favorite places in the world but I havent been there since 2004. You need to do the research as far as the surf spots but theyre out there

Bali is a hop, skip, and a jump from Singapore. They got cheap flights like every hour.
It’s a Hindu oasis surrounded by about 200 million Muslims.
It’s the least “third world” spot out of all those mentioned (Nam, Laos, Malay, Thai, etc..).
Just go to Bali and thank me later.


If you were single you could actually “bang a bangin Hindu” there.

This seems like a good option. Two hour direct flight, May is the prime swell season, tons of spots, tourist friendly for wife, boards and travel to spots easy.

I've never been to Bali, but I've been to Sumatra. The waves, scenery, and everything was unreal, but I don't think Sumatra is going to work for a four day trip. The spots (I.e.. Nias, Bawa, etc. are remote).

Don't pass up Indo if the chance comes your way.

 

The whores are best in Thialand followed by Indo specifically Bali. Singapore surf is crap most always, beer is expensive and you will probably be caned.

If its only four days Bali is the best bet.....there's an excellent place to stay with a nice pool and very nice Balinese architecture.... 2 mins from ulu on scooter......called the gong ac...the cheapest rooms are basic but the nice rooms are really nice and its only like 25-35$ a night ...the woman named cadet (shocker) that runs it is awesome.....it is also easy to get your hands on a good board....lots of shops selling used boards right on the cliff at ulu....enjoy

I was in Bali in 1998, right after they overthru Suharto, or Sucarto, or whatever his name was.
The economy was in shambles.
Fifteen cent bottles of coke or sprite, 90 cent noodle bowls with chicken or fish.
4 Dora lobster dinners on the beach at Jimbaron Bay.
7 bucks for an hour long massage!

I was in Singapore in last May for work and literally went Bali for about 36 hours - the trip was from NJ->Singapore->Bali->Singapore->Brussels->NJ in 8 days. Caught the first flight from Singapore to Bali on a Saturday AM at like 530 and was in the water at Keremas by 10ish. Took the last flight from Bali to Singapore on Sunday night, so yea...like 36ish hours. Totally worth it though and worked with Slim at www.baliwaves.com for sleep and board rental. Would not work with him if my wife was along though.
As mentioned above, Bali is crowded. I was there twice before for long vacations, and its just part of surfing there. You'll be there during high season, so there should be no shortage of swell, but you will deal with crowds. If you expect to grad dawn patrol, there will probably be 10 guys beating you to it...unless you surf somewhere a little more remote like Nyang Nyang or Green Balls. Visiting Bali 3 times over 6 years, I feel the island on a bit of a downward tailspin. I don't really see the beauty that everyone talks about, but I also don't spend more than $50/night on a place to stay, even when my wife is with. I stayed at the Gong mentioned above for a bunch of nights - cheap, awesome people, but no ac as of 2015 - if its hot, I'd recommend elsewhere if the wife is with you.

There are tons of other waves in the surrounding area (Indo), but most of them require a lot more dedication to get to...which is why Bali is so popular.

Philippines is hit or miss. You will def. score better waves in Bali. I spent 8 days or so on Siargao (Cloud 9) and there were waves every day, but cloud 9 was only good for 2 of those. Other breaks required a short, cheap boat ride. Cloud 9 is a classic when its on though. I enjoyed the culture, people, and general vibe of the Philippines way more than Bali though.

I never really looked into it, but I'd love to surf Japan sometime.

 

I live in Japan right now, don't bother. Not much different than being on the US East Coast when it comes to consistency, except much more crowded here.

Philippines in May is tough because that's right in the middle of their summer season and no storms are in the area, you will have to rely on distant ground swells to surf the Pacific Ocean side.

I'm pretty interested, myself.

My friend who lives in Florida, just got back from there yesterday. He sent me pics of it snowing in Tokyo while he was there, which is apparently pretty rare. He didn't really have time to surf while he was there. He was pretty much there on business.
