You guys are funny, especially Barry. And the French side as you refer to it is Quebec and sorta New Brunswick, Quebec is almost it's own country. They know how to live to say the least. Where else can you buy fresh cheese curds, wine and cold beer at a gas station?? (well,not anywhere else in Canada anyway) And yes, if you are Canadian coming into Canada it's a breeze, but all of my friends who come up from the US are given the full work up. After year five of coming up for the summer, my buddy finally got it down to about 20 minutes. We have a summer house on the south shore, and May/June can actually be pretty damn good. I've surfed there since 2001. You just have to look at the 10 day and make the call. It's way more mellow then and cheaper than peak season. Halifax and East shore are the best bang for the buck and like SW and S swells WAY more than our zone, that really needs some E component to get the points firing. Everything is craft beer and local food markets and all that good stuff. Have a good car, show respect and be prepared to do other activities if the surf doesn't happen.
o barry brought a bort with me to st john this past summer in case i could leave a job early before returning home, hit Halifax-east area and make it back to home in normal time - swell didn't pan out crossing back in to us guard sees the bort and says, chasin waves, eh? good luck
Yea... even the touristy stuff is fun in Halifax. Hit up Argyle Street, check out the Blue Nose, tour the Alexander Keith's brewery, listen to some great live traditional Celtic music... try to catch Signal Hill at the Lower Deck.
You got it man, tons of stuff. We ride the bikes to town and take it slow.. also worth mentioning is how much hype Hurricane season gets. I was there for the last 3 weeks of September and it was B+ at best. Warmer water sure but any local will tell you a good frontal system or NE’ster beats it hands down. In fact some of the best waves that trip were from a low that went off the coast of Long Island and sent in a NE swell just before some Irma swell arrived..
Say what?? You swelled up because of Irma?? All kidding aside: Do you live in Halifax? We may be coming up that way next Fall--I have promises to keep, and it will be miles before I sleep, I presume.

That is a good plan, lh--hope you make it!! And I am 66, been surfing 56 years now. One thing that may change your plan...grandchildren, kids, family. I too planned to return to PR to retire, but decided against it, because of family. I can travel to the tropics when I get the urge, which I don't much anymore. Hurricane Maria put a stop to last years trip, but we may go soon again.
I have a friend up there close to Cow Bay. I would love to get up and visit. Point breaks on every corner. Not to mention, it would be an epic wilderness adventure. I say go for sure. Wait until fall.
Has anyone here ever flew into Canada? Just wondering if their Customs officers in the airport are as asshole-ish as their land port counterparts.
That's an excellent vintage Barry, one of my best surfing buddies that comes up from S.C. just turned 70 last year and he still rips it up and is a full surf rat with a quiver of boards that would make surfer drool. We are about 1.5 hours south of Halifax on the south shore. Going out for a trip soon. Actually had a fun sesh on Lake ON yesterday. Ice on Sunday, no ice yesterday.. Been a while.
